DomainK Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Mahatma Gandhi was a great man. A great karmyogi who believed in the power of work. His teachings have been invaluable and his contribution to modern India in his lifetime has been invaluable. But why do we stop working on his birthday? The natural answer would be to celebrate his birthday. How may Indians actually spend this day celebrating his birthday? The percentage would be too insignificant. An entire nation stops working for a day because its the birthday of a former leader. What is the use of that? Why cant we celebrate the same day in another way? Some more productive way? Why cant we sit down and evaluate the way we work? Why cant we dedicate a couple of hours in the morning to the great man and then resume work? Why stop work? How exactly do we benefit by stopping work on the several national holidays? In stead, government employees should be given more paid leaves that they can avail when they need it. Apart from the election days and some of the major religious festivals, there should be no holidays at all. If someone wants holidays on certain occasions, they can apply for the paid leaves and take it. Why should the entire government machinery stop working for an entire day? Schools and colleges are a different issue all together. Children should be given as much break as possible.
coffee_rules Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Ask this to Nehru and his cohorts in Congress. Ambedkar and Gandhi fought for the upliftment of the so - called harijans. Nehru/Congress created a vote bank by revering their leaders. That's why we then added birthdays of a lot of leaders as national holidays. I think Ambedkar's bd is also a national holiday now.
Lurker Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Be happy for that. India is following USA model these days anyway. Pretty soon, if its not true already, you will have similar holiday model. Considering USA has the fewest number of holidays in the world(as compared to other Developed countries) soon enough Indians would be crying hoarse about working too much. I suppose its already happening. Every other day there is an article on how the current generation have poorer health, more stress, hypertensions and all the goodies that modern lifestyle brings.

I was watching this documentary on outsourcing yesterday and I found Hindu people in Bangalore are celebrating christmas, because a lot of them work in call centres for US companies and they get holidays at the same time as US

I am very much against the present education system. I hate to see a small boy/girl carrying an over sized back pack in an uniform with glasses on and looking like an intellectual. That innocence is now rare to see in the faces of children since they have to be too serious at what they do...sometimes even more serious than grown up professionals with mounting pressure from schools and parents. Children are natural learners. Thats how god has created us. They learn without stopping. We dont have to force them to learn. The modern education system is synonymous with forced learning of nonsense. That interferes with the natural learning processes that children are gifted with. Modern education is a legal crime. What use are child labor laws as long as we have such schools in India?
