Guest HariSampath
Actually Gavaskar batted both left and right handed within the same innings, he switched once. That was the feat. I very much doubt if there has been any other instance of this happening in a FC match anywhere in the world. Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
richard hadlee? Correct . Can you name the test match/venue etc ? btw how did you get it ? Link to comment
sharma
i checked these 2 lists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricketing_knight http://stats.cricinfo.com/statsguru/engine/player/37224.html?class=1;template=results;type=allround;view=match since hes played 3 matches in pakistan during the early part of his career, i figured he woulda kicked or have been "appeared" to have kicked a muslim umpire somewhere atleast lol educated guess u can say :P Link to comment
sharma
i wasnt even born at that time so no way i woulda heard of it, and never heard of it being mentioned anywhere at all lol. u provide the context now.......lol Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
but you are wrong. I knew you had "guessed" because of my "knighted " clue and also ruling out Ian Botham. Link to comment

sharma
well if its not botham and richard, has to be someone from windies. unless ofcourse he "declined" knighthood, or was knighted for something other than cricket. Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
Ok, here is the correct answer with context. It was Richard Hadlee, and it was in the Chennai test match between India and NZ in 1976. Hadlee punched and Kicked umpire Mohammed Ghouse in the stomach after a caught behind appeal had been turned down. The entire NZ team surrounded the umpire and were violently arguing with him, with Hadlee losing control and assaulting the umpire. The only player in the NZ team who stood away from it all and showed a thumbs down sign to the crowd, shaking his head in disapproval, was Warren Lees, the NZ 'keeper. Link to comment

sharma
was the umpire's debut match apparantly, and cricinfo doesnt mention any of this on his page. Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
Oh yes...he was knighted for his services to the game :D but in that series or later ...no action at all. Even when he came back to India later in 1988 to beat the world record, hardly a single mention of this incident was made in the media by our pappu press. In fact I doubt if 90% of the sports journos covering the game today would even be aware of it, as most of them are following cricket for just 10-15 years. Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
In fact as many would have seen Richard Hadlee is crying loudly that he has not been issued with an invitation for the Chappell Hadlee series LOL. He says its a "family thing" and as his family's name is attached to a trophy , he should be invited. Perhaps that way even Trevor Chappell should be invited. Here is how the inauguration would be reported.... "The Chappell Hadlee series started with 2 of the game's greats, Richard Hadlee and Trevor Chappell starting proceedings. In true tradition and as a reminder of their contributions to the game, Hadlee kicked off proceedings by kicking the umpire, and Trevor Chappell bowled the first ball underarm" Link to comment
sharma
amazing really.. give us another question, and this time make it tough ;) :P Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
Well, all my questions have been pretty tough and can be answered/guessed with plenty of clues...but here goes...another one.. Can anyone name an Indian player who had fielded for the opponent in a test match, when he himself was part of the playing 11 for India ? 10,000 for the first correct answer. Link to comment
vadodaravictor
^Really tough question.. Link to comment

fineleg
Must be some ancient Test match - it is beyond old 80s, age old 70s and maybe even age age old 1960s cricket. No one in their right frame of mind would do it in last few decades. Link to comment
Guest HariSampath
Here is another one....With so much talk about the switch hit of Pietersen in recent times...does anyone know when was the first time a switch hit was played by an INDIAN batter, maybe the first ever too in an international game. Switch hit means of course, reversing the batting grip after the ball is bowled, and not a reverse sweep etc, as most would know. hint : it was during a Reliance world cup game. Link to comment
sharma
i think it was one of those matches when the raja of so n so was captain... the english were short of a fielder so one of the indian guys decides to field for them, something like that Link to comment
