Nearly 2,000 traffic policemen were out on the streets in Mumbai. The results astonishing. 541 people were booked on Wednesday night for drunk driving. This compared to only 338 cases last year. Does that mean more Mumbaikars are drinking and driving? Deepak Kapoor, Transport Commissioner, Maharashtra, says: "Don't look at the numbers. If the numbers are increasing that doesn't mean more Mumbaikars are drinking it just shows vigilance has increased." An argument that finds concurrence in another set of numbers: Over 200 officers were out on the streets through 31st night armed with breathalysers only to check on drunk drivers 30 per cent more than last year And this was part of the Mumbai Police's sustained campaign against drunken driving that began in June 2007. 27,300 cases have been registered, drivers fined, licenses revoked, and more than 11,000 people sent to jail for a day or even a week. The Mumbai Police has a two pronged approach to curb drunken driving. On one side they have increased vigilance on the streets and are making more arrests.
