Ram
Has added a new dimension to the ODI game. Before, both the blocks of 5 over power plays after the initial 10 overs at the beginning of the game were chosen by the fielding side. Now, the batting side can choose when it wants to have the 2nd block of 5 overs. South Africa decided to have their batting power play between the 45th - 49th over of the chases and on both the occasion, they scored more than 45 runs in that block, winning the 1st ODI and coming really close in the second. This is definitely one of the better additions to the ODI game. Link to comment
Sachinism
Ponting and Botha both seemed to be confused by it Link to comment
cowboysfan
Ponting and Botha both seemed to be confused by it imo both teams dont have the hitters in the middle order to truly take advantage of it.they would be better off taking it when they 2 batsmen set(in the 1st innings) Link to comment
Ram
This is definitely going to change the dynamic of slog overs and chases. Team batting first or chasing would want to preserve their wickets for the last dash. If you want to make full use of this, you need some hitters at nos. 6,7 and 8. Considering this, Ravindra Jadeja may be a good addition to the team, along with Yusuf Pathan. Link to comment
Desi Cartman
but this can mean that more teams will be waiting till its too late ! if a team uses the PP earlier and lose wickets then they have an option to recover and have another go in the last 3-4 overs but if you wait too long and fail then it will look stupid ... IMO there should be 15 overs of PP ... 10 in the beginning and then 5 as per the batting side .. 20 overs of powerplay means that there is nothing in the game for the bowlers Link to comment
Pak_Forever
Cricket is already dominated by batsmen and this rule only goes on to make it more batting friendly game. It's an interesting move from strategic point of view, let's see how its gonna go in the next few matches. Link to comment
cowboysfan
as dhoni has shown it is better to take the powerplay in the 1st innings with 2 batsmen set and who can really hit the ball-a trick ponting missed in the CB series. Link to comment

Shane
Batting Power Play - In the second ODi, i personally think Dhoni faupaed by taking the powerplay between the 40th - 45th overs, We were 5 down, with not a specialist no 8, 210/5 after 40, we could have played around 5 overs got around 25-30 runs and then gone bezerk in the last 5 with 5 sticks in hand, we could have posted around 280 But having taken the PP early, our singles were blocked and in the act of clearing the infield, we lost 2 and managed to scape to 257 !!! fineleg
sometimes taking batting powerplay actually works against the batting team. Just a sudden shift in field, and loss of momentum happens. Best seems to be take it when well settled batsmen are in. Link to comment
Zap_Brannigan
I think it is a really bad idea to have it implemented by the batting team any time. It really puts the advantage to the team batting second and it defeats its purpose of making the 15-40 overs interesting. I think either of these 2 should be used - 1st Method : PP1 - 1st 5 overs PP2 - 5 overs anywhere between 10-25 overs - As the fielding captain wishes PP3 - 5 overs between 25-50 overs as fielding captain wishes 2nd Method : PP1 - 1st 5 overs PP2 - 5 overs anywhere between 10-25 overs - As the fielding captain wishes PP3 - 5 overs between 15-40 overs as batting captain wishes 15 overs of PP is more than enough. The game is slanted towards the batsmen as it is. Link to comment
