Michael Clarke, Simon Katich came to blows after Sydney Test

Recommended Posts

Andrew Webster February 06, 2009 12:00am A HEATED showdown between cricket pin-up Michael Clarke and a teammate has revealed simmering tensions within the Australian team. Opener Simon Katich grabbed Clarke by the throat in a row over the singing of the team song after their Sydney Test win. Shocked teammates had to pull them apart. It is believed Clarke wanted the singing over early so he could leave to be with fiancee Lara Bingle. The clash rattled the Aussies in the middle of a summer of discontent in which they lost a Test and one-day series to South Africa. Clarke will captain Australia against New Zealand at the MCG today. Katich, 33, is not in the one-day squad. Both players yesterday insisted they had "moved on". "Yes, we had a disagreement after the Sydney Test," Clarke told the Herald Sun. "This kind of thing occasionally happens in cricket teams. "We didn't see eye to eye on that night, but we have been teammates at NSW and Australia a long time. "We've spoken since, including catching up the other night at the Allan Border Medal. There's no issue between us." Katich confirmed the disagreement, saying: "I've spoken to Michael as recently as today and we're both big enough and old enough to have moved on from this." The confrontation was sparked when Clarke wanted to sing the team song Beneath the Southern Cross soon after winning the Test - Australia's only notable victory for the season. The team came off the field at 6pm and Clarke wanted to be out by 11pm, so he could have drinks with Bingle and friends at a venue he organised. It is customary for the "custodian" of the song - currently Michael Hussey - to decide when to let loose. Hussey did not begin the song until near midnight after the fight broke out. Clarke and Katich will play alongside one another this month in the three-Test tour of South Africa. Katich said there would be no animosity between them. "Michael and I are focused on some tough Test cricket that's coming up for Australia against South Africa in a couple of weeks," he said. Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said no action had been taken against the pair and it was considered a private matter. "What happens between these guys is their business," he said.

ok but grabbing ur vice captain by throat is not a everyday ego clash or disagreement or throwing drinks on ur teammate
Mate, physical clahes happen ALL the the time in all teams, only very rarely do they come out. You cant expect a group of 13-14 people from different backgrounds to simply come together and get along like best buddies.
