I have seen many of my southern brothers being discriminated just because they couldn't speak Hindi, labelling them unIndian. One poor dude was trying to hard to convince another friend of mine that even though he doesn't know Hindi, he is a very patriotic Indian. I told the guy to chill it and that he doesn't need to worry about his Indianness just because he is not able to speak a language that he had no contact with and no use for.

I was taught is school: India's national animal: Tiger India's national bird: Peacock India's national flower: Lotus India's national game: Hockey India's national anthem: Jana gana mana and India's national language: Hindi.

But, by pushing Hindi as the "national language", it is assumed that every Indian knows the language and if he/she doesn't, there is something lacking in that person. For that matter, on ICF itself, when people post in Hindi (myself included), everyone is cool, but when regional languages are used, there is so much hue and cry.

Thats what they teach in schools. They wont teach it if its wrong.

I'm lucky that I speak and understand Hindi. See, just now you said: "all Indians know Hindi and English" Tat kinda proves the point of my previous post. It is very hard for us to challenge this assumption as we have grown up with it. But, an assumption it is and a sadly discriminating one at that.
