I for sure, can't understand many words ( like politicians say shauchalay, mantralay, mutralay ), I can never read hindi text comfortably At best, I know chalo hindi..one of the benefits of living in a multi-cosmo place like Mumbai where there is no dominant lingo unlike places like delhi where there is 'ing punju dialect. South and Kolkatta have their respective lingo How is bangalore..they dont speak in 011110001000 do they? Believe me even most north Indian fall in that category .. most people know English much better than Hindi in both conversation as well as writing :winky:

I can agree that its quiet easy to understand but no chance I will ever be able to converse in it I also agree that most Punjabis think that all north Indians know Punjabi language.. I can also understand simple Punjabi but it is foolish to expect me to speak in Punjabi .. and most Punjabis settled in Delhi etc. do not know the raw punjabis spoken in villages :giggle:

A most fascinating piece of this whole lingo debate is that all this nonsense is basically spewed by high moral ground Hindus. Never heard a Muslim have any problems with Hindi. Most of them, if not all, know Urdu which is similar to Hindi. Half of the time I can not converse with a fellow Karnataka Hindu(unless I speak English) but no such problems with a Kannada Muslim. Would Congress (or BJP) come to power if they won 225 plus seat (out of 552). Hell yeah!! 60% -70% Indians speak/understand Hindi as 1st language/2nd language /working knowledge. Would Congress (or BJP) form "National" Government if they have the support of 300-350 MPs? You freaking kidding me? They will pass every godamnn legislation out there! No I dont want this to be done by numbers. But as Maya Dolas said in Shootout at Lokhandwaala - yeh gali donon taraf se khulti hai Khan. It has to be a quid pro-quo and not some illogical argument about how Hindi will kill Tamil/Telugu tehzeeb. xxx

Poetry is lot deeper a subject than merely communication. Every Indian, well most Indians, who love ghazals will have spend more than a few evenings just listening to Jagjit Singh and soaking away their ghum. That is not communication mate. Just thought I'd inject a little litany into this debate. Y'all can fight on! And FWIW, I am from the South, and I know where Sikkim is. Never been there, but I can point to it on a map. I can also point to Patthanamthitta on a map - but that is beside the point.
