h4te Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I use IM more than I used to cos it's one of the easiest forms of internet communications to encrypt and therefore keep your conversations totally private and secure. I use email encryption too but it can be quite hard to use and understand if you're not a geek like me. :hmmm: you've been saying this encryption thing for a while..... brah, what do you discuss that needs to be kept so secret? :giggle: :finger:

Also I know people who are members of left-wing political organisations. Not banned or terrorist organisations but still it's better to be on the safe side. And anyway my private conversations are just that to me - private and no-one else's business.

But I do remember, many years and moons ago, when internet was just about starting to spread, I used to pay these ridiculous amounts of money (25 rs/30 mins), just to go to these internet parlors and chat with friends. It was THE coolest thing to do back then. :D

Pidgin supports encryption through OTR on Linux too. If you're using up to darte versions of the OTR software, the other guy won't receive garbage if he doesn't use it anymore. They'll simply get a message saying that someone has requested an OTR private session and you don't have the software along with a link to the site you can download OTR from. Encryption has other uses too. For example you can give out passwords or sensitive data to someone without worrying if it'll be intercepted.

Adium's OTR implementation is crap. They don't support authentication via the Socialist Miillionaire's protocol like Pidgin and the other OTR enabled clients do. And Macs are crap as well.
