maggot_brain Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 IM seems to be dying. There are less and less people on popular IM services as far as I can see. Personally I use the following services: Jabber / XMPP / Gtalk (the same thing different names) MSN (also able to talk to Yahoo chat users) Does anyone else use IM and if so for what purpose? Does anyone use IM in their jobs?
ludhianvi Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I usually have MSN on for instant chatting :woot:

h4te Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 yes, i feel traditional IM is dying too. I used to have an AIM account when i was in middle/high school....at that time, that was the "in" thing before facebook/myspace. Haven't really used AIM since high school. Just sign into Gmail and u can chat with people in your contact list .. its easy ' date=' simple , doesnt require any downloads and allows voice chat as well as video :pcguru:[/quote'] x2 i do the same. you don't have to install anything, etc. I think they just got video chat recently too. Google just rocks although, i haven't used it at all, there is facebook chat that a lot of people i know use now. like google, don't have to install anything. oh, the only other chat i do is in chathood at ICF. :giggle: again, no need to install any software. sensing a trend?
maggot_brain Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 I prefer not to trust Google or Facebook with my private data. I tend to use Pidgin with Off-the-Record messaging to encrypt my messages end-to-end. Gtalk is just Jabber / XMPP anyway.
10DuLKaR Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I am on GTalk, MSN and ICQ.. Used to be on Yahoo before, not now..
Holysmoke Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 +1 for Pidgin/Adium Have acc with aim, msn and gtalk but adium handles them all well so no hassles of multiple programs.
Sachinism Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 was addicted to msn before, now barely use it You'll probably find me on gtalk all the time
DomainK Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 There was a time I was big time addicted to yahoo messenger. Not anymore. I open yahoo once in a while to check off like messages from old friends. Most of them sent sms thee days though....so I get around one off line in a month. I am always on Gtalk BTW. Its easy and light.
DomainK Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 BTW one-to-one live chatting has it's own charm. Social networking has been an overdose and I am starting to dislike it.
maggot_brain Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 Just wanted to add; anyone who uses MSN, Gtalk, Jabber / XMPP, Yahoo IM or AIM and wants to chat about Cricket; India; best places to download music, films, software off the net; history, philosophy and politics, just PM me your details and I'll add you. BTW one-to-one live chatting has it's own charm. Social networking has been an overdose and I am starting to dislike it. I deleted my Facebook and Myspace accounts years ago.
h4te Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Email trumps IM that's because no one wants IM you :haha: :icflove:
punjabi_khota Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 AIM is still very popular among yengsters in US
punjabi_khota Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Email trumps IM sure, when you are on everyone's ignore list. I am sure even the AIM bot is not on your friend list. :hahaha:
maggot_brain Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 I use IM more than I used to cos it's one of the easiest forms of internet communications to encrypt and therefore keep your conversations totally private and secure. I use email encryption too but it can be quite hard to use and understand if you're not a geek like me.
