TIMES NEWS NETWORK / Sumit Mukherjee MUMBAI, April 6: Sharad Pawar is a politician steeped in the Congress's culture of when-in-doubt-consult-everyone-and-then-take-the-middle-road. For those who might have been expecting some kind of an upheaval at Friday's BCCI meeting presided over by Pawar, they had another thing coming. The message that emerged was clear: try and create an impression of change without really rocking the boat. And so, Rahul Dravid is almost certain to remain captain ? and at least for the moment, he's unlikely to have a full-time coach like Greg Chappell to contend with. BCCI, having failed to convince Chappell to continue as Team India coach at Friday's review committee meeting, is likely to split the post into three on the advice of Dravid. BCCI felt there was no better choice to lead the side than Dravid, who had earlier accepted the entire responsibility for his team's failure in the Caribbean. Dravid then pushed for three separate full-time coaches for batting, bowling and fielding as well as full-time administrative and media managers. The skipper's proposal was put forth at the BCCI officials' conclave with seven former captains, who felt that it would be better to have a former player accompanying the team as 'cricket manager' as top cricketers don't need to be taught cricket. They simply need to be guided. Sunil Gavaskar, who was offered the post first, declined politely, saying that the job should go to someone younger who would be able to relate better with the current players. Ravi Shastri, who was also Dravid's choice, thus emerged as the unanimous choice to take over the reins of Team India from Chappell on a month-long tour of Bangladesh in May as an interim arrangement. Shastri, who has no previous coaching experience, said he was not averse to the idea, but needed a day or two to mull over it. Should Shastri also decline, India A coach Robin Singh, who is Dravid's choice as the team's fielding expert, may have to double up as cricket manager in Bangladesh. Former pacer Venkatesh Prasad, who is Dravid's choice as bowling coach, may also get BCCI's nod. All these appointments are likely to be ratified by the working committee on Saturday. All this is good news for former cricketers, who can now hope to be gainfully employed in some capacity or the other and tour countries they had never been to as players. A direct fall-out of BCCI's latest experiment could see top coaches shying away from taking up the coach's job with Team India. The cricket manager concept also goes against the grains of all that Chappell had been trying to achieve during his 22-month tenure that ended after a row between the coach and the senior players in the media. Chappell, who presented his 'World Cup report' to the BCCI office-bearers on Friday, spoke at length on critical issues facing Indian cricket, but refrained ? anticipated by this paper ? from pointing a finger at any player or official.

Re: Coach's job may be split into three I like this. I would also prefer if they did this with the captaincy as well. No one individual should be bigger than the team, but that is exactly what this captaincy thingy in cricket does. All on-field decisions should be dictated from the pavilion by professional coaches and there should be point-men on the field to simple effect those changes.

Re: Coach's job may be split into three i read somewhere that chappell who was supposed to leave India on friday night will now be in mumbai on saturday as well as he is not-feeling-well and will be available for further discussion with BCCI if required.

All on-field decisions should be dictated from the pavilion by professional coaches and there should be point-men on the field to simple effect those changes.
Absolutely hate that American craap .... what next lets just build some robots that can play cricket .... ehh ? :lol:
depends on whether you want to see well executed professional decisions or not. players are best left to execute. the coaches are best to left to coach and come up strategies looking at film, etc. depending on a know-it-all captain to make the right calls and live or die by it is not necessary given the high stakes these days. how many times have we talked about poor/puzzling bowling changes or field placements?

Re: Coach's job may be split into three what will Prasad tell a guy like Zak that he dosent know already...Prasad was ok but not great...we need someone better, whom he players will actually respect and can learn from Heck Sree can tell Prasad more about how to swing the ball than the other way around...

coaching seems to be a strange thing. it appears that the more mediocre you were as a player, the better you will be as a coach.

Re: Coach's job may be split into three again we are making the same mistake...a Great bowler can not be guaranteed to be a great bowling coach.. Johnty Rhodes could not teach paks ..how to slide... the person behind MRF academy is nit Lillie..but some other guy.,..and he is a no name ? in indian cricket..player in early 80s.. Venky has been interested in being a bowlinf coach...and he has done some kinda course on coaching as well... and Robin Singh is just perfect choice for fielding...and he also has coaching experience... both these players are true blue indians to the core...and will give more than 100 % for the team...

Re: Coach's job may be split into three Bad times in Indian cricket seems to be harbinger of great fortune for countless average to mediocres like prasad, sabba karim, Arun Lal, chetean sharma, and Atul wasan etc..Any one remotely associated with cricket has guaranteed employment in either print or electronic media. Chalo , at least the ex-cricketers are the winners if not the playing ones!
