Desi Cartman Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 God = answer to unanswered questions. what will happen when we die : God will take us to haven , How long will I live : God will decide etc. I will believe in God once the suffering and pain for the millions on this planet ends. There are so many homeless people , kids who dont get to eat , children who get abused every day. If all this can end then I can start believing in God but till then its just a symbol of hope
yoda Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 i am a theist, no, i don't think anything that can happen in my life can change me into a non-believer. but ofc, never say never.
graphic23 Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I believe in my parents. They believe in God through experience. I have no reason to doubt them since they're pretty confident that its not mere coincidence. I believe in God through my parents.

Anonymous Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 The only thing that is going to make me a 'believer' again is if I actually SEE God, or a manifestation of his presence, in the form of a verfiable miracle etc. I am willing to consider the possibility of the existance of a super-natural being, but I will NEVER accept giving that form varieties of names, forms and places of worship. marirs_mania, exactly my thoughts..:agree: Mankind's biggest insecurity has always been the end, in simple terms death. People shudder at the thought of decaying into smaller lifeless matter. so man found himself a way to feel good about death vis-a-vis religion. Most religions have their own idea of life after death and most of them have the heaven-hell theory. It is the insecurities of man that have translated into the mindless (unquestionable) pursuit of god. This is also evident in the fact that theism is directly proportional to age of a person. As the rigors of age catch up with a person, god takes center stage. Most people in their youth are not seriously god fearing, but as the end nears, god is everything...

I wish you had seen what I have. However, remember, a miracle is no indication of God. Its just a phenomenon that we do not understand. God rarely shows miracles. He does not have to. He has created a perfect system with its own rules and regulations. So wait for miracles not. Faith will come to you in course of your life. Hardly anyone has died without it.
DomainK Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 My only problem with atheists is that the concept of no GOD leads them to believe that their bad deeds will go unpunished as long as they are smart enough. There is an entity that you can not out smart. And yes, your bad deeds will not go unpunished.

DomainK Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 How can i believe that when "God" supposedly chose a pedophile and a warmonger as one of his prophets. I will not attempt to answer that question. That's a serious question you have raised and you will never find the answer by throwing the question into an online forum. Most of us believers and non-believers base our assumptions on little or limited knowledge though we firmly and many times stubbornly believe in what we do. I can present arguments against what you said. But that will lead the discussion in a direction where it will get....lets say....undesirable. However, if you want answers, throw that question some day to a learned man. A man of wisdom. In the spiritual world, we stand alone (IMO). Right now I am busy helping myself. Helping/answering others is best left for those who have attained a certain superiority and have gathered enough wisdom. Debates between atheists and theists has been going on for ages and will go on for ages. What you want to believe is your decision. How you want to stand is your decision. Its all personal.

At least atheists ARE what they are they don't wear a mask to impress someone else. :icflove:

maggot_brain Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 And you are the one complaining about generalizations a few days back? Way to go. You're not a hypocrite at all. Nice try. I don't want to go into the semantics of language but what does 'probably' mean as opposed to 'definitely'?
umpire Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 >So the song is about lies, hypocrisy, nonsense and superstition then? I don't believe in amorphous concepts like hope or faith. So you could say I have faith in nothing yes. Good Job Maggot Brain, you dint even try to understand the song and you made a great remark on it. >I don't believe in amorphous concepts like hope or faith. So you could say I have faith in nothing yes. So you are a hopeless person right? and you have no faith right? You don't even have faith in your own abilities?? So when you went for the job interview you had no hope at all, you just went for the heck of it. You did not believe that you will get the job?? You had no hope as you don't believe in amorphous concept.
triam Posted July 7, 2009 Author Posted July 7, 2009 I am an atheist, the reason I asked this question was, there used to be this blog I used to frequent 2-3 years back called ravingatheist.com, some of you may have known it, pretty smart guy who wrote very well about atheism etc, and he was popular in the online media. Yesterday I went to the same blog after 2 years or so, I see he has converted to being a full on catholic, and apparently he had declined to list out the reasons of why he changed. So that got me thinking, and ask myself what should happen in my life that will probably make me a believer again. I am totally stumped since I cannot come up with any answers.

As dark as it may sound it is true specially if one has to deal with the death of beloved ones. If we were all individuals only yes being a athiest could work but when you lose your child you will definitely end up looking for where your dear one went, and if you could meet him/her sometime again. There is no way anyone would relish to imagine his beloved child, or sibling, just happenchance who is now dead and buried and well thats that. Religion gives hope. And hope, even if misplaced, is often the reason to live. xxx

One of the foremost questions that I tackled long and hard was "death" and how to deal with it. If there is one thing that I am jealous of believers, is their unshakeable faith of afterlife, and how that helps them deal with death. There are mainly 2 types of atheists, one is the group which becomes an atheist because it is cool, or to rebel against parents, family etc, and the second group is the one which does careful introspection before calling it a day for faith. This guy from what I knew reading his blogs (which I admit is not a whole lot) came across as lets say Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins , obviously below their intellect and knowledge as scientists, thats why I was surprised. I have met numerous believers and non believers who jump back and forth, so this is not a first time event. More over, for an intelligent atheist, if he/she converts to a religion like deism or buddhism, which inherently have lesser hypocrism and far less mythology etc, it would be understandable in a different way, but not any abrahamic faiths, which are full of mythology and internal conflicts.
