Buchi Babu tournament is named after Buchi Babu Naidu who was an Indian cricketer, known as the father of Madras cricket, who established the Madras Presidency Matches. This tournament is said to be the lung opener for state teams before the domestic season begins. None of the teams have ever undermined the significance of the competition and have always fielded their best unit. Over the years, the tournament has attracted some of the top teams of India and even the likes of Sunil Gavaskar had utilised the event to assess or regain their form ahead of the domestic season. As in the recent past, a New Zealand A squad containing several Test and ODI hopefuls will be participating, along with their coach John Wright, who trained the Indian team not long ago. In all, 16 teams will be playing on a league-cum-knockout basis. The teams have been divided into four groups of four each for the preliminary league and the matches will be of two-day duration with 90 overs allotted to each side. The top team from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The tournament concludes Aug 29, according to a press release from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary Kasi Viswanathan. Among the notable players in the Kiwi squad is fast bowler Shane Bond who is coming out of a stress fracture for which he is undergoing treatment. Incidentally, Bond, who had a stint in the Indian Cricket League before and is now back in the mainstream, has happy memories of the Buchi Babu tournament as his performance in the competition some eight years ago earned him a berth in the New Zealand team. Bond has been included in the New Zealand one-day side that will be involved in a tri-series along with India following a two-Test series against Sri Lanka commencing Aug 18. The annual tournament offers a prize money of Rs.1 lakh to the winner and Rs.50,000 to runner-up.

Iqbal?s six for 53 guides Mumbai to a position of strength More... Watling anchors New Zealand ‘A’ innings Iqbal’s six for 53 guides Mumbai to a position of strength Badrinath and Balaji rescue TNCA XI Prabal Pratap Singh stars in Madhya Pradesh’s win PIVOTAL KNOCK: B.J. Watling propelled New Zealand ‘A’ innings with a determined effort. CHENNAI: B.J. Watling’s hard-grafted 97 (211b, 8x4) at the top of the innings and stubborn but brisk lower-order resistance helped New Zealand ‘A’ make 317 for nine in 90 overs against Andhra on the first day of a first-round league match in the Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament. The 24-year-old Watling battled for over four and a half hours at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. In his time, he helped his side set up base with partnerships of 70 with Jamie How for the first wicket and 61 with Peter Fulton for the second, witnessed a mini-collapse that had New Zealand slipping from 131 for one to 140 for four, and assisted the first stage of recovery. Grinder’s knock Watling’s was a grinder’s innings, built on the single, of which he ran 42. He appeared to struggle with his timing during his innings, but a crisp straight drive that took him from 87 to 91, arms accelerating through the ball, stood out. He was doubly watchful against Andhra’s three spinners, the sweep his only concession to adventure. How’s 47 had two magnificent pull strokes, Fulton’s 40 contained four effortlessly struck sixes, but New Zealand ‘A’ lost its way against spin after lunch. Nathan McCullum (57, 76b, 2x4, 1x6) and Kyle Mills (42, 53b, 1x4, 3x6) raised 83 for the seventh wicket at a run a ball, swinging the momentum. McCullum frequently advanced down the wicket to the medium-pacers, while Mills set himself up and used his long levers to clear the ground. For Andhra, opening bowler P. Vijay Kumaar, left-arm spinner Sankara Rao, off-spinner G.V.S. Prasad, and leg-spinner K.S. Barath Reddy claimed two wickets each. While bowling three spinners helped, the side still deserves credit for getting through its overs quickly in difficult conditions. Iqbal scalps six Meanwhile, Iqbal Abdulla’s six for 53 guided Mumbai to a position of strength in its match against Vidarbha. Brought on as late as the 37th over, Iqbal lent the middling attack the potency it direly needed. At 153 for three, thanks in main to Amit Paunikar’s blazing start, Vidarbha looked set to accumulate a fighting total. The introduction of Iqbal first slackened Vidarbha’s scoring rate and then unpicked the seams of its batting line-up. Bowling a predominantly straight line, interspersed with the occasional delivery that was slightly pulled back, he ensured the batsmen were candidates for more than one mode of dismissal. First to go was Ravi Jangid, nailed plumb in front by a slightly faster one. Alind Naidu, who had hoarded a patient and chanceless 75 till then, could only watch as the arc of the delivery took his edge and ended up at first slip. The left armer’s wiles were doubly effective against a line-up stacked with right-handers, his angles and line difficult to fathom. Amol Ubarhande’s 74 was an innings that had shades of belligerence and desperation in equal measure. He used his feet superbly against the spinners, and drove with authority against the pacemen, before top edging Iqbal to short-third man. The rest of the innings — came undone smoothly, with every gentle tug that Iqbal imparted at its strings — finishing at 257. Mumbai successfully negotiated a tricky half an hour’s play, scoring 39 runs before bad light intervened. In other matches, S. Badrinath (138, 199b, 7x4) and L. Balaji (81, 66b, 5x4, 2x6) added 114 runs in 17.4 overs for the eighth wicket to rescue TNCA XI against Assam and Madhya Pradesh seamer Prabal Pratap Singh returned figures of six for ten to set up a nine-wicket win against Himachal Pradesh. The scores: At MAC: New Zealand ‘A’ 317 for nine in 90 overs (B.J. Watling 97, Jamie How 47, Peter Fulton 40, Nathan McCullum 57, Kyle Mills 42) vs. Andhra. At RKM-Vivekananda: Vidarbha 257 in 75.2 overs (Amul Ubarhande 74, Alind Naidu 75, Iqbal Abdullah six for 53) vs. Mumbai 39 for no loss in 9.1 overs. At SRMC: TNCA XI 403 in 89 overs (M. Vijay 54, S. Badrinath 138, L. Balaji 81) vs. Assam. At CPT-IP: Combined Districts 230 in 80.5 overs (K.B. Arun Karthick 53, S. Suresh Kumar 70, Utkarsh Patel four for 62) vs. Baroda eight for two in seven overs. At ICL-Guru Nanak: KSCA 220 in 61.2 overs (Amit Varma 105 n.o., Stuart Binny 57) vs. TNCA President’s XI 82 for two in 28 overs. At Pachaiyappa’s: Himachal Pradesh 84 in 45.4 overs (Prabal Pratap Singh six for ten) lost to Madhya Pradesh 87 for one in 22.4 overs (Jalaj Saxena 48 n.o.). Points: MP 4; HP 0. At Murugappa: Hyderabad 264 for seven in 88.1 overs (Abhinav Kumar 85, Benjamin Thomas 52, Amol Shinde 46 n.o., Kamlesh Makhwana five for 79) vs. Saurashtra. At V.B. Nest: Orissa 230 in 85.1 overs (Niranjan Behra 44, Suvit Biswal 60) vs. Kerala nine for no loss in six overs Chennai Aug. 16: S. Badrinath’s 138 (199 balls, 7x4) helped Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI pile up 403 against Assam on the opening day of the Buchi Babu all-India invitation tournament here on Sunday. Medium-pacer L. Balaji contributed 88 (61 balls, 5x4, 2x6) and was associated in a 114-run stand for the eighth wicket in 17.4 overs with the centurion. Arnel Konwar picked three wickets for the visitors. TNCA President’s XI, after restricting KSCA to 220, were 82/2 at stumps. Earlier, southpaw Amit Verma with an unbeaten 105 (170 balls, 14x4) and Stuart Binny (57) rescued their side from 53/5 with a 139-run partnership. Seamer Palani Amarnath took three wickets. Half centuries from Abhinav Kumar and Benjamin Thomas took Hyderabad to 264/7 against Saurashtra when bad light stopped play with 1.1 overs remaining. Kamlesh Makhwana was the most successful bowler with five wickets. Combined Districts could muster only 230 against Baroda. K.B. Arun Karthik (53) and S. Suresh Kumar were the main contributors. Never knew that competition at this level also can be challenging even for players having played international cricket! I'm eager to see how Mumbai goes in its batting tomorrow. Playing on matting wickets shouldn't be easy! And Himachal at this level too is hopeless. How could they lose the match within 80 overs? I think competition at semifinal level should be interesting when few good bowlers will be facing few good batsmen. It is sad that Delhi, UP etc do not send their team here.

Tarun Nethula has been a promising leggie and comes from Auckland. Wonder how Kane Williamson is going in this tourney? I was told he was going with the NZ 'A' squad. He's a 17 year old and in his very first year in domestic cricket he raked up an average over 50. He's been marked as a special player and I'm sure he will make his debut for NZ sometime this year or the next. There are couple of Aucklanders that are showing a lot of promise. One of the Indian lad that has migrated from India that used to play for India U19 as no.11 batsman now is a top batsman for Auckland. He scored the 3rd highest ever domestic individual score last season (280+ or something). NZ cricket at the moment can do with some fresh blood.

Thanks for the informative post about NZ A Ravi. I was really waiting to see how the Kiwi batsmen coped with matting wickets and spin bowling in the heat of Chennai. But unfortunately none of the scorecards are available! And it was terrible dampner yesterday when the second and the final day of all the matches was washed out. We couldn't get to know how Rohit et al did on that surface, nor could be get to know how Kiwi bowlers, especially Bond would have bowled there! Terrible result, really! Rain plays spoilsport The second day’s play in the first round of the Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament was abandoned after heavy showers lashed the city. Madhya Pradesh was the only side to score full points in the first round, having completed a nine-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. The second round is scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Instant success for Bond Fast bowler Shane Bond marked his comeback to international cricket in style on Wednesday, taking a wicket with his first ball during New Zealand A's two-day match against a Combined Districts XI in Chennai, India More... Instant success for Bond 7:31PM Wednesday Aug 19, 2009 Fast bowler Shane Bond marked his comeback to international cricket in style today, taking a wicket with his first ball during New Zealand A's two-day match against a Combined Districts XI in Chennai, India. Bond, who has not played a test or one-day international since 2007, made a morale-boosting start to his graduated return to the New Zealand senior side by splaying the stumps of opening batsman Thalaivan Sargunam. He then affected another breakthrough to have figures of two for 14 after four overs after New Zealand A were asked to bowl first in the second round clash at the annual Buchi Babu All-India Invitation Tournament. The 34-year-old is among the limited overs reinforcements due to join New Zealand's tour of Sri Lanka for two Twenty20 matches and a short Tri-Series after the two-test series concludes in Colombo on August 30. Bond, who was unavailable for NZA's earlier games after being laid low with a stomach bug, plans to resurrect his injury-plagued 17-test career when Pakistan tour New Zealand in November-December. - NZPA

http://www.hindu.com/2009/08/20/stories/2009082057521800.htm Combined Districts makes 359 Chennai: On a day of fluctuating fortunes, Combined Districts fought back admirably to make 359 for eight in 90 overs against New Zealand ‘A’ on the opening day of the second round in the Buchi Babu tournament here on Wednesday. For the Kiwis, Shane Bond picked up three for 26. After Combined Districts had won the toss, the spearhead struck with the new ball when X. Thalaivan Sargunam decided not to play a delivery that zipped back from outside the off-stump. Then E. Aswin edged into first slip’s hands. Later, Bond impressed with the older ball too, reversing the sphere to catch Varun Kumar leg-before. Opener K.B. Arun Karthick and S. Suresh Kumar handled Bond well. The duo added 183 (262 balls) in a strokeful third-wicket partnership. Considering the New Zealand pace attack included Bond, Tim Southee and Kyle Mills, it was a creditable association. Centuries galore in Buchi Babu cricket tournament Bombay News.Net Wednesday 19th August, 2009 (IANS) With the rains letting up, it poured runs on the opening day of the second round league matches of the All-India Buchi Babu cricket tournament here Wednesday. Sahil Kukreja of Mumbai scored an unbeaten 157 against TNCA President XI. The opener's knock off 248 balls that included 15 fours boosted Mumbai's total to 313 all out. Hyderabad's Ambati Rayudu (133) and Abhinav Kumar (112) scored strokeful centuries against Orissa. Rayudu scored at a more rapid rate for his 173-ball knock, including five fours and four sixes, after Abhinav laid the foundation (205b, 5 x 4, 2 x 6) as Hyderabad posted 373 for eight in their quota of 90 overs. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh dismissed Tamil Nadu for 176 with skipper Subramaniam Badrinath (89) being the top scorer while Shane Bond, on a comeback trail, bowled fast and straight in three spells to capture three wickets to round off an impressive performance against Tamil Nadu Districts XI. Vidharbha restrict Karnataka: Wakhare, Jangid share 8 wickets Chennai: Spinners Akshay Wakhare and Ravi Jangid shared eight wickets to help Vidharbha restrict Karnataka to 226 all out in a Zone C Match of the Buchi Babu All India Cricket tournament here today. Electing to bat on a pitch that offered some bite for the spinners, Karnataka batsmen fell to the guiles of off spinner Akshay Wakhare (four for 77) and left arm spinner Ravi Jangid (four for 45) and caved in meekly. The innings began on a dull note as opener K B Pawan Kumar (45, 142 balls, 3x4) and Deepk Chowgule (36, 111 balls, 1x4) consumed 28.1 overs for their 53-run second wicket stand as Karnataka overcame early hiccups to be in a position of strength at 91 for one. The exit of Deepak triggered a collapse as Karnataka slid to 123 for five in no time. Batting at Number six, Amit Verma, who top scored with 60 (88 balls, 9x4) and Stuart Binny (27, 35 balls, 2x4), showed signs of recovery with a brisk 56 run stand for the sixth wicket in 13 overs. However, once the partnership ended, rest of the innings fell apart as Karnataka capitulated from 224 for six in 79.5 overs to 226 all out, losing their last four wickets in 1.4 overs with adding any score. Vidarbha skipper Alind Naidu had a profitable day in the middle taking five catches fielding in the slip. In Reply, Vidarbha were 38 for on 11 overs. Brief scores: Karnataka : 226 all out (including five penalty runs) in 81.3 overs (K B Pawan Kumar 45, Deepak Chowgule 36, Amit Varma 60, Stuart Binny 27, Akshay Wakhare 4 for 77, Ravi Jangid 4 for 45) vs Vidarbha 38 for one in 11 overs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- No news about Rohit Sharma or Jaffer?
