Northamptonshire will not be allowed to take part in the Champions League even if they qualify from England's domestic Twenty20 tournament because the side contains three players associated with the unauthorized Indian Cricket League (ICL), league chairman Lalit Modi has said. Northamptonshire have three players - Nicky Boje, Andrew Hall and Van der Wath - who have not severed ties with the ICL. "Champions League rules are very clear that no team with players connected to any unauthorised cricket can be a part of it. Northants will be disqualified from the league if they enter the final (of England domestic T20 cricket) and there would be a vacant slot," Modi said. If there is a vacancy, the spot could be filled by the Chennai Super Kings, who finished fourth in the second season of the IPL. The Bangalore Royal Challengers, Deccan Chargers and Delhi Daredevils have already qualified for the league. Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi will host the inaugural Champions League between October 8 and 23. Source C'mon Northants.:cheer:

Champion's League : New rule on multiple-qualifying players The Champions League Twenty20 has introduced a new rule on the cricketers who qualify for multiple teams. More... Tuesday 18th August 2009 New rule on multiple-qualifying players The Champions League Twenty20 has introduced a new rule on the cricketers who qualify for multiple teams. In that case, Delhi Daredevils will have to cough up USD 200,000 to retain the service of a Dirk Nannes or a David Warner in the tournament. As many as nine cricketers qualify for two teams and according to the new rule, the 'away' team will have to pay USD 200,000 to a player's 'home' team to retain his service, the CL T20 Governing Council announced on Tuesday. However, the 'away' teams are not eligible for compensation if a player chooses to play for his 'home' team, said the organisers as the teams are set to announce their 20-player squads for the tournament starting on October 8. Nathan Bracken (NSW Blues, Royal Challengers Bangalore), Brendon McCullum (Otago Bolts, NSW Blues), Dirk Nannes (Victorian Bushrangers, Delhi Daredevils), David Warner (NSW Blues, Delhi Daredevils), Cameron White (Victorian Bushrangers, Royal Challengers Bangalore), Andrew McDonald (Victorian Bushrangers, Delhi Daredevils), Herschelle Gibbs (Cape Cobras, Deccan Chargers), Farveez Maharoof (Wayamba, Delhi Daredevils) and Dwayne Smith (Deccan Chargers, Sussex Sharks) face the dilemma of making a choice between the two teams they represent. In case of Smith, neither Deccan nor Sussex is his 'home' team. "These qualification rules ensure players will have a choice, subject to existing contracts, of who they represent in CL T20. The USD 200,000 compensation paid to 'home' teams will create significant interest in the lead-up to the squad announcements," Dean Kino, CL T20 Governing Council member and Director of Legal and Business Affairs said. "Once a team names its initial squad, CL T20 will assess which players have been listed for two or more teams. Players who have been nominated by multiple teams will then be contacted by CL T20 to nominate their chosen team. Players will then be given 24 hours to determine which team they wish to represent," added Kino. Delhi Daredevils have four players in their ranks who also qualify to represent their home team, which means the Indian Premier League side led by Virender Sehwag would have to shell out USD 800,000 to enjoy their services. CL T20 Chairman Lalit Modi called it a 'revolutionary element' and said teams would laugh all the way to the bank. "The ability of players to qualify for multiple teams adds another revolutionary element to the Airtel Champions League Twenty20. A number of players will face a tough decision over the coming days as to which team they will represent in the inaugural tournament in October," he said. "In addition to the USD six million in prize money, each team is guaranteed a USD 500,000 participation fee. This means that even teams that finish from the 9th to 12th place at the Airtel CLT20 will earn USD 600,000, while the winners will receive more than USD 3 million," Modi added. According to the rules, members of each team's initial squad must have either played for, or must have been contracted to play for, his nominating team in the most recent qualifying Twenty20 competition played by that team. For this year's event, no person who has played in any unofficial cricket event -- like Indian Cricket League -- can be named in a 2009 CL T20 squad either as a player or coach. However, the teams are not disqualified from the 2009 CL T20 if they played rebel players in their qualifying tournament, provided they terminated their rebel contracts before May 31, 2009.

Champions League throws up tough choices Many of the 12 teams participating in the Champions League Twenty20, starting in Bangalore on October 8, face tough choices in selecting their final squads after officials released updated tournament rules today. These regulations will force teams like Delhi Daredevils, the IPL qualifiers, to cut down on their foreign strength to minimise a payout for "away" players - pegged at $200,000 for each player - and Sussex to omit Murray Goodwin because of the batsman's past links with the ICL. Deccan Chargers have already decided to let Herschelle Gibbs play for Cape Cobras, his home team. Delhi have four foreign players - Dirk Nannes, David Warner, Andrew McDonald and Farveez Maharoof - whose home teams have also qualified for the tournament. They'd have had to shell out $800,000 as compensation for all four players but are planning to call up only two of them. "Under CLT20 rules, provided a player qualifies for more than one team, all those qualifying teams can nominate that player," the tournament organisers said. "If the player then decides to play for an 'away' team rather than his 'home' team (the team from the country he is eligible to represent in international cricket), the 'away' team must pay US$200,000 compensation to the 'home' team." This process will obviously happen in consultation between the teams and the players involved. Sussex, meanwhile, will have to do without Goodwin after it was confirmed that players who have played unofficial cricket will not be allowed to play in this edition of the tournament. However, the organisers said, teams are not disqualified from the 2009 CLT20 if they played rebel players in their qualifying tournament, provided they terminated their rebel contracts before May 31. So, unlike last year, when Kent were barred for having ICL players in their squad, Sussex will not be disqualified for having played Goodwin in their domestic Twenty20 tournament, which is considered as the qualifying round for the Champions League. Goodwin, the former Zimbabwe player, quit the ICL before May 31. Amrit Mathur, the chief operating officer of Delhi, confirmed that his team will reduce its foreign strength while submitting a preliminary list of 20 players by August 24, the first deadline. This list will be pruned to 15. "We have to maintain a balance between Indian and foreign players in the final 15," Mathur told Cricinfo. "Besides, we will also have to consider that there is a certain payment involved for fielding foreign players whose home teams have also qualified." The case of Dwayne Smith, the West Indies allrounder, is interesting because he can play for Sussex and Deccan Chargers, neither of which is his home team. Although the rules don't stipulate any payment in such cases, there is nothing to prevent the teams from arriving at a separate arrangement. "Once a team names its initial squad, CLT20 will assess which players have been listed for two or more teams," Dean Kino, Champions League's governing council member and director, legal and business affairs, said. "Players who have been nominated by multiple teams will then be contacted by CLT20 to nominate their chosen team. Players will then be given 24 hours to determine which team they wish to represent." The Champions League Twenty20, which is a multi-nation multi-club event, was set to start on December 3 last year but was aborted after terrorists struck in Mumbai, one of the main venues, on November 26. This time, invitations have been extended to this year's domestic toppers from seven countries, including Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils (India), New South Wales Blues and Victorian Bushrangers (Australia), Cape Cobras and Diamond Eagles (South Africa), Sussex Sharks and Somerset Sabres (England), Otago Volts (New Zealand), Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies) and Wayamba (Sri Lanka). Players eligible to play for multiple teams * Nathan Bracken - New South Wales, Bangalore * Brendon McCullum - Otago, New South Wales * Dirk Nannes - Victoria, Delhi * David Warner - New South Wales, Delhi * Cameron White - Victoria, Bangalore * Andrew McDonald - Victoria, Delhi * Herschelle Gibbs - Cobras, Deccan * Farveez Maharoof - Wayamba, Delhi * Dwayne Smith - Sussex, Deccan

Airtel CL T20 squads announced The 12 teams of the inaugural Airtel Champions League Twenty20 have named their preliminary squads. More... Thursday 27th August 2009 Airtel CL T20 squads announced The 12 teams of the inaugural Airtel Champions League Twenty20 have named their preliminary squads. Of the 234 players nominated by the sides, 110 have already played international cricket for their respective countries. New South Wales Blues and the Delhi Daredevils will each be capable of playing a team wholly comprising of international players. Wayamba, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Victorian Bushrangers meanwhile have 10 internationals each in their ranks. Trinidad & Tobago and Sussex feature nine players with international experience, while the Cape Cobras and Deccan Chargers have eight, Otago have seven and the Diamond Eagles and Somerset have four apiece. "The announcement of the preliminary squads ensures the first Airtel Champions League Twenty20 will be a true contest between the best of the best, Lalit Modi, Chairman, Champions League Twenty20 Governing Council, said. "A congregation of the world's best players, playing for the world's best domestic teams, vying for the ultimate prize to be crowned Champions - we could not have asked for anything more. "The calibre of players named by the competing teams is extraordinary. We have World Cup champions, both in 50-over and Twenty20 cricket, international captains, legends of the game and some of the world's top-ranked players. "I'm certain that cricket fans around the globe will be treated to truly amazing cricket at the inaugural Airtel CLT20 when the first ball is bowled on October 8 at Hyderabad." Of the nine players eligible to play for multiple teams, only Dirk Nannes was nominated by two preliminary squads. "Dirk Nannes who was nominated by both the Delhi Daredevils and the Victorian Bushrangers, has informed Airtel CLT20 that he will play for his ‘away' team, the Delhi Daredevils, rather than his ‘home' team, the Victorian Bushrangers," Dean Kino, Champions League Twenty20 Governing Council Member and Director of Legal and Business Affairs, said. "As a result, Delhi is required to pay US$200,000 compensation to Victoria according to Airtel CLT20 regulations. "The other players who were eligible for multiple teams will compete for their ‘home' teams in the tournament, while Dwayne Smith who was considered an ‘away' player for both Deccan and Sussex, will represent his English team." Teams now have until September 7 to trim their squads to 15 ahead of the tournament.
