That I don't agree with. A no. 1 side can't be whitewashed 8-0 like a school side or in England's case 3-0 against a weak Pak side. I do accept that 8-0 had various other causes and Indian team was definitely one of the top 2 during their reign but it is simply not justifiable in my book.

They were not top ranked after the the Eng series, and India did deserve to be ranked 1 based on their performances earlier. Just because they lost later doesn't mean India didn't deserve to get there in the first place. I am a firm believer in the saying "you are what your record/ranking says you are". Rest it's all conjecture and couldas wouldas shouldas.

Before India, Australia were ranked 1 team. After the retirement of legends, Aus was in transition phase and lost many matches. That gave chance to other teams to go up in rankings. Now since rankings take 3 years performance in account, so the teams which were already in top tier during that period has better chance of take rank 1 position. From Aug 2007 to Dec 2009 No code has to be inserted here. Here is series results for SA during same period WI (home) won 2-1 Eng (away) won 2-1 Aus (away)won 2-1 Ind (away) drawn 1-1 Aus (home) lost 2-1 Eng (home) 0-1 (although series was won) Pakistan (away) won 1-0 Bang (home) won 2-0 NZ (home)won 2-0 Bang (home) won 2-0 India during same time SA (home) drawn 1-1 Aus (away) lost 1-2 SL (away) lost 1-2 Eng (away) won 1-0 Aus (home) won 2-0 Pak (home) won 1-0 Eng (home) won 1-0 NZ (away) won 1-0 SL (home) won 2-0 England Lost to India at home and away, lost to WI, SL, SA and won ashes, WI series and NZ series twice. After that India maintained rank 1 till WI tour in 2011. No code has to be inserted here. Ranks depends on what you did in past and not on what you do in future. Isn't saying that you don't deserve that rank is directly discrediting your past achievements. Btw, India lost 4-0 as ranked 1 side.
