Lee's Test hopes take a major blow; Out of reckoning for Gabba Test Brett Lee's chances of playing in the first Test against West Indies have suffered a huge blow after he was ruled out of New South Wales' clash with Tasmania due to injury. More... Brett Lee ruled out of NSW's match with Tasmania with elbow injury November 16, 2009 Paceman Brett Lee's Test future is in chaos following a flare-up of his elbow injury just a week out from Australia's opening clash against the West Indies in Brisbane. Australia captain Ricky Ponting said that Lee was back in the Test mix before news filtered through of the speedster's complaint. His latest setback is only going to heighten speculation about how much longer the 33-year-old will continue trying to push his body to play in the longest form of the game. Lee has the option of replicating Andrew Flintoff's decision to ditch Test cricket to prolong his career by only playing the shorter forms of the game. He hasn't shown any sign that he is considering going down that path just yet but his list of injuries have started piling up over the past 12 months. Lee has not played a Test in nearly a year and with his No.1 trick still being speed, it is hard to see any Test return being anything more than fleeting. He says he will consider surgery on the elbow that threatens to derail his entire summer as it did his NSW teammate Stuart Clark during the 2008/09 season. Just like Clark, Lee is finding it is a very long road back from injury for a quick on the wrong side of 30. The Blues tearaway suffered the injury during Sunday's one-day loss to Tasmania but he manfully still bowled out his full allotment of overs. NSW coach Matthew Mott admitted the injury raised concerns over Lee's longevity. "Definitely, I think any time you get an injury like that to a fast bowler there are concerns," Mott said. "The good thing about Brett is that he has always bounced back pretty well and he is a strong, fit bloke. "He had a lot of time out which should hold him in good stead for longevity because he is really only at the bowling age of 28 so hopefully this is just a setback and he is back into it." The injury shortens the list of contenders for pace bowling spots against the Windies at the Gabba. Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus all look set to resume their places in the national side for the clash starting November 26. Clark's spot is considered the most under threat, he and Blues teammate Doug Bollinger will try to push their cases against the Tigers in the Sheffield Shield clash at the SCG starting Tuesday. Victorian quick Clint McKay is another being considered while Blues spinner Nathan Hauritz could well trump the quicks to provide balance to the side. Opener Phil Hughes is expected to overcome a finger injury to play for the Blues at the SCG, probably only having one bat to make a late impression with the Gabba Test squad set to be named on Thursday. Meanwhile Cricket Australia has moved to harden up its Test batting ranks by naming inspirational former opener Justin Langer as batting coach.

West Indies off to shaky start as Gayle flies back to Jamaica West Indies have kicked off their tour of Australia on the wrong foot with skipper Chris Gayle flying home and their top-order failing in their opening match against Queensland Bulls. More... The West Indies make shaky start in first tour match of Australia By Jim Morton November 18, 2009 West Indies have kicked off their tour of Australia on the wrong foot with skipper Chris Gayle flying home and their top-order failing in their opening match against Queensland Bulls. The Windies lost Gayle shortly before the toss after he rushed home to Jamaica to be with his seriously ill mother, who has been admitted to hospital in Kingston. Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin took the reins and elected to bat first after winning the toss under cloudy skies at Allan Border Field. Openers Adrian Barath (0) and Travis Dowlin (2) were unable to handle the swinging ball and fell cheaply before Ramnaresh Sarwan (22 not out) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul dug them out of deep trouble to be 3-92 at lunch. It could have been better for the tourists but Chanderpaul fell for 41 just before the adjournment, when he top-edged a hook shot off part-time medium-pacer Nathan Reardon to long-on. It took Alister McDermott, enjoying his first-class debut at 18, just nine balls to pick up his first scalp when he clean bowled Dowlin, promoted in the place of Gayle, who shouldered arms to an in-swinger. Barath, expected to open in the first Test at the Gabba starting Thursday week, never looked at home and was out for a 20-ball duck after inside edging another debutant, policeman Luke Feldman, behind. Both McDermott (1-8 off five overs) and Feldman (1-20 off 10) bowled impressively in the swing-friendly conditions. Sarwan was incredibly patient, scoring his unbeaten 22 off 79 balls, while Dwayne Bravo scored a flashy run-a-ball 14 not out before lunch. While the tourists were hopeful their captain could return to Brisbane quickly, Gayle must be considered in doubt for the first Test. Team manager Joel Garner indicated the hard-hitting opener, who flew out of Brisbane at noon local time, was granted time off to be with his mother. "The management and players in the team as well as the WICB are with Chris and his family at this time. We also want to wish his mother a speedy recovery,'' Garner said.

Doug Bollinger gets nod but could carry drinks at Gabba Ben Dorries November 19, 2009 12:04pm RISING fast bowler Doug Bollinger has been named in Australia's first Test squad while veteran seamer Stuart Clark has been dropped. Bollinger is in a 12-man Australian squad although he remains likely to carry the drinks in next week's first Test against the West Indies at the Gabba. Experienced batsman Mike Hussey retains his spot while Shane Watson will open the batting with no recall for young gun Phil Hughes. The Courier-Mail print edition"The squad includes only one change from the side which played the last Test of the Ashes series in England," national selection boss Andrew Hilditch said. "Doug Bollinger comes in for Stuart Clark. Stuart is extremely unlucky to miss selection but we have been very impressed with Dougs form in the recent ODI series in India and feel he deserves this opportunity in the Australian squad." Injured Taylor ruled out for Windies Injured Taylor ruled out for Windies West Indies have been hit by the news that pace spearhead Jerome Taylor will miss the remainder of their tour of Australia. West Indies have been hit by the news that pace spearhead Jerome Taylor will miss the remainder of their tour of Australia. The 25-year-old injured his left hip and back after bowling just nine overs on day one of the first Test in Brisbane, which ended in a heavy defeat for the Windies. Taylor, who did not play in the warm-up game against Queensland due to general soreness, will return to Jamaica on Tuesday. West Indies management are yet to name a replacement player. Captain Chris Gayle, who described the innings-and-65-run loss to Australia as a "disaster", had hoped Taylor would be able to take his place in the side for the second Test starting in Adelaide later this week. The Windies are expected to recover middle-order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan for the clash after he missed the first Test with a back injury.

Hilfenhaus in doubt for Test BREAKING: AUSTRALIAN quick Ben Hilfenhaus has pulled up sore from the first Test and is in grave doubt for the Adelaide Test starting on Friday. More... Clint McKay replaces Ben Hilfenhaus for Adelaide Test Robert Craddock November 30, 2009 03:30pm LATEST: VICTORIAN fast bowler Clint McKay has been chosen in an Australian Test squad for the first time following the breakdown of workhorse Ben Hilfenhaus. Hilfenhaus has been battling a tendon injury in his knee which flared during the first Test against the West Indies on the weekend, and will miss this weekends second Test in Adelaide. Hilfenhaus, man of the match in Brisbane, will have two weeks of intense treatment in the hope of him being fit for the third Test against the West Indies in Perth in a fortnight. Doug Bollinger, 12th man in Brisbane, appears likely to earn a start in the side with McKay poised to carry the drinks. McKay, 26, has only played 20 first-class matches, but he had a breakthrough season last summer with 33 wickets at 21 for Victoria. He starred for the Australia A team against Pakistan A during an unofficial Test and was invited to tour India with the Australian one-day team as a late replacement. The injury to Ben Hilfenhaus is very disappointing following his outstanding Ashes and his man-of-the-match performance in Brisbane, but hopefully with treatment he will be fit to be considered for selection for the third Test in Perth, selection chairman Andrew Hilditch said. "Clint impressed all with his performances in India with the one-day squad and with his bowling for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield this year," he said. "We also feel his style of bowling will be well-suited to the conditions in Adelaide should he be selected in the starting 11." Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said the demands of Test cricket and the subsequent increased workload have made it harder to manage Hilfehnauss injury.

The 28-year-old pacer was charged with a Level 1 offence, contrary to Section 2.1.3 of the code, which relates to "showing dissent at an umpire's decision." The offence relates to an incident that took place in the 52nd over of the West Indies' second innings when the umpire turned down Bollinger's appeal for lbw against Brendan Nash. Ponting comes under fire for frequent use of DRS Former cricketers have criticised Australian captain Ricky Ponting for repeatedly using the umpire referral system, and warned that it could cost Australia a Test match in the long term. More... Ponting comes under fire for frequent use of DRS December 08, 2009 12:45 IST Former cricketers have criticised Australian captain Ricky Ponting for repeatedly using the umpire referral system, and warned that it could cost Australia a Test match in the long term. Ponting came under fire on Monday when he unsuccessfully used his two video appeals within nine overs in a tense first session at the Adelaide Oval. The situation frustrated Doug Bollinger later in the day when he could not refer a confident lbw shout after Brendan Nash shouldered arms. Replays suggested the ball would have hit off stump. Former Australian captain Bill Lawry said both Ponting and rival skipper Chris Gayle have been premature with their use of the referrals, and said it could cost Australia a Test. "Both captains have mucked it up ... if there is doubt they (video umpires) are going to stay with the first decision," The Herald Sun quoted Lawry, as saying on Channel 9. "Now, if we get a shocker where Gayle is plumb lbw and there is no referral it could cost you the match. You've just got to get it right," he added. Ponting's first referral was when Bollinger's caught-behind appeal against West Indian opener Adrian Barath was turned down. Video umpire Bruce Oxenford did not overturn the original decision when hot-spot technology showed no conclusive edge and it appeared Barath's bat flicked pad rather than ball. Ponting used his last video lifeline when Gayle prodded at a ball down leg side and Brad Haddin took a diving catch to his right. Standing umpire Ian Gould ruled not out and video replays confirmed the ball had flicked Gayle's pad. Former England captain Tony Greig said Ponting should be more cautious with his use of video referrals. "I think Ricky got it wrong. I think you have got to be very careful of using up your referrals for nicks because they are very hard to prove," Greig said. "The big point is knowing when to use them and knowing where your best chance is of getting it turned over."
