Riley's Girl
Thinking about it' date=' im not sure if I am right yknow. Because you get people like Donald and Pollock, whose names dont [i']sound dutch. May well be of Eng origin... Pollock is English. Donald may not sound Dutch, but the man is Afrikaans. Grew up in a rural, mostly Afrikaans region of the country. And look at Loots Bosman. Hearing the name, most people will be expecting a white Afrikaans-speaking South African. They'd be wrong. Riley's Girl
When you say ‘Afrikaan’' date=' what do you mean by that? Does that refer to their native they speak? Someone can be of Dutch origin and yet speak Afrikaan right? Or is it a separate 'race' by itself?[/quote'] Afrikaans is a language that developed out of Dutch. Not indicative of race though mostly spoken by white people and the coloured people of the Cape provinces of South Africa. For example, AB de Villiers, Roelf van der Merwe, JP Duminy, Wayne Parnell are all Afrikaans. Link to comment
Riley's Girl
Getting back on topic, as a South African I can't point a finger, because one of our international rugby stars, the prop Tendai Mtawarira, was born in Zimbabwe and as far as I know he still holds Zim citizenship with permanent residence in South Africa. Sooda
Cheers for that Liz. I did think i was majorly oversimplyfying by relying on their surnames- some are obviously dutch, others like Donald, less so. Didnt think De Vill was French at all! Link to comment
