Jeffrey Robert Thomson was widely regarded as the fastest bowler of his times! Following are the highs and lows of his career: HIGHS # Took 6/46 in the second innings of his comeback Test against England in 1974-75 to lead Australia to a prolific victory. # In the first Test against England at Edgbaston in 1975, Thomson hit 49 which was his highest score in unlimited overs cricket. In the same match, he took 5/38 in England’s second innings and went on to win the match, and in effect the series, for his team. # In a fast bowling contest held in 1978, Thomson competed against the likes of Michael Holding and Imran Khan. Thommo’s pace was over 6 km/hr more than the next best, Holding! # In 2008, Wisden identified five prominent former cricketers who had missed out on the “Cricketer of the Year†award during their career for various reasons. Jeff Thomson made it to that list along with Abdul Qadir, Bishan Singh Bedi, Wes Hall and Inzamam-ul-Haq. LOWS # Was hampered by a broken foot before his Test debut but was unaware of it and hence returned dismal match figures of 0/110 on Test debut, against Pakistan. # His statement before his comeback Test against England; “I enjoy hitting the batsmen more than getting them out. I like seeing blood on the pitch,†drew a lot of criticism. # In the winter of 1976, when his contract with the Australian Cricket Board was still in effect, he wanted to join Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket and hence fought a court case which he eventually lost.
