Bracken boost for desperate Blues Bracken boost for desperate Blues The defending champions New South Wales Blues are on the verge of ending their KFC Big Bash campaign, if they lose against the Queensland Bulls on Wednesday. The Blues are currently placed last in the points table and a loss either on Wednesday or against the Southern Redbacks on Sunday will end their run in the tournament. The Blues have won only one of their previous three outings. For the Blues, fast bowler Nathan Bracken has returned to the squad, coming back from an arthroscopic surgery on his right knee early October. The left arm seamer’s inclusion has boosted the Blues’ bowling attack but it remains to be seen if the former ICC world number one bowler in ODI’s will be able to turn things around for the defending champions. The Blues are desperate to chalk out a win and in a move keeping with the desperate times, the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 20 champions have included Phil Hughes in the 15 man squad even as the southpaw continues to be on stand by for Simon Katich in the Australian Test side. The Bulls will need to watch out for David Warner, who remains a threat, having struck 107 runs from the last three games at a strike rate of 227.65. The Blues need to win both their next two games if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the preliminary finals on January 19. The Bulls received a shot in the arm with the inclusion of New Zealand skipper and left arm spinner Daniel Vettori. Queensland, who had a terrible start to the tournament, got their act together in the previous match against the Tasmanian Tigers and won. Thanks to a better net run-rate, they are placed two places above the Blues. High on confidence, the Bulls will go into Wednesday’s match with a more positive mindset. They will hope for good shows from James Hopes, Lee Carseldine and Andrew Symonds. Hopes has been providing good starts to the Bulls but the middle order has failed to convert those starts. He has been equally effective with the ball. In the last game against the Tasmanian Tigers, he scalped three wickets. Symonds has not lived up to his reputation in the tournament. The out of favour Aussie all-rounder is long due, and who knows, that important knock might come against the Blues. All-rounder Nathan Reardon who was dropped from the team against the Tigers, is likely to sit out of Wednesday’s crucial match. The ANZ Stadium will see lot of fireworks as the two team clash in a must-win game for both sides.

Victorians in a spot of bother Victorians in a spot of bother The Victorian Bushrangers find themselves in a desperate situation as they take on the Tasmanian Tigers at the MCG on Friday. The Victorians need to win Friday's match if they are to claim a stake in the preliminary final, scheduled on January 19, and a place in the Airtel Champions League Twenty20. But the task at hand is a hard one, with the Bushrangers losing their previous two outings. For the first time in the history of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, the Victorians lost two back-to-back matches. Batsmen have been a huge concern for the Victorians. The top order has failed to score, which has put the pressure on the tail-enders and they have succumbed. The team’s highest run scorer in the season so far is the middle order batsman Andrew McDonald. From his four outings, he has scored 81 runs at an average of 27. The top three batsmen – Matthew Wade, David Hussey and Cameron White have scored at an average of 20 or less. The bowlers have provided early breakthroughs but it is the batting that has cost the Victorians their previous two games. Fast bowler John Hastings is the leading wicket-taker for the Bushrangers. He has scalped seven wickets from last four encounters but has been very expensive. He has been well supported by Jon Holland and Dirk Nannes. But none of them are a match to Tasmanian Rana Naved-ul-Hasan. The Pakistan allrounder is the highest wicket-taker in the tournament so far. He has picked up nine wickets at an average of 11.88. The Bushrangers will need to watch out for the fast bowler, as he has troubled batsmen with huge reputation. However, his good show has not rubbed on to his team-mates. Wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine has looked good but only in patches. Middle-order batsman Rhett Lockyear has often come handy after the top order has wavered. Captain George Bailey and Travis Birt have been effective in the middle but have not been able to lead the team to victory. The Tigers are currently placed on the fifth spot and a win in Friday’s match will keep their hopes alive, else their dream will come to an end.

Gayle all set to return for Warriors Gayle all set to return for Warriors The Western Warriors got a shot in the arm ahead of Saturday’s crucial match against the Queensland Bulls with the inclusion of Chris Gayle to the side. West Indian skipper has missed the Warriors’ last three games after injuring the intercostals muscle on his left side during their opening match against the Redbacks. Gayle hit an aggressive 44 off 24 balls but his knock did not save the match for the Warriors. The 30-year-old had earlier said that the injury should have ruled him out for at least two weeks. Warriors coach Tom Moody has said that the West Indian looked at easy during practice and he confident that Gayle will feature in the Saturday’s clash. Coming victorious in their last two outings against the New South Wales Blues and the Victorian Bushrangers, the Warriors are high on confidence and are looking to seal a home preliminary final on January 19.

Redbacks get to host the finals while the 2nd placed team 'll host the prem' final. Damien Fleming said that the team that wins tomorrow in the match b/w WA and QLD 'll get to host the prem' as both of them are ahead of Vic in terms of NRR.

Afridi likely to miss BigBash final Afridi likely to miss BigBash final The Southern Redbacks’ chances to win the KFC Twenty20 BigBash received a major blow after it was reported that Shahid Afridi could miss the final. Afridi was included in the Pakistan ODI squad, as they take on Australia in five one-dayers starting from January 22. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, the Redbacks have requested Pakistan to allow Afridi to play in the crucial BigBash final on January 23 but so far there has been no response. The Redbacks’ coach Mark Sorell said, "You'd have to say it's only a slim chance. He's a significant player for them and you'd imagine they wouldn't want to risk him becoming unnecessarily fatigued.†"He's a high quality player and we'd love to have him available. But if not, other guys are just going to have to step up." Afridi has been a key player for the Redbacks and has been instrumental in picking up important wickets. From their four encounters, Afridi has scalped six wickets at an economy rate of 5.68. Afridi has also chipped in with the bat in the middle order. Earlier, Pakistan manager and selector Abdul Raqeeb said that the Redbacks’ request had not been given a consideration so far. "We have only named a squad for the one-day series and we are in the middle of a Test match," Raqeeb said. "I can't make a comment now. That is a matter that would have to be decided when we can sit down with Shahid Afridi."
