the_indian_fan
but those racists over at cricinfo didnt even nominate him in their list whereas players like jayawardene with lower odi avg than sehwag were included for a player who redefined the role of an opener in tests, who is the only player ever to have both of these ave/sr combinations in cricket - tests - ave of 50+ with a sr of 80+ odis - ave of 30+ with a sr of 100+ and to think of the signifance of the above, no other player has managed even 1 of the above combinations. sehwag in odis, has the best sr(103.44) of all those who have made over 6000 odi runs and in tests, he plays with some extraordinary strike-rates career sr = 80.44 sr when score >100 = 81.70 sr when score >150 = 85.79 sr when score >200 = 94.26 sr when score >250 = 99.58 and this clearly shows the longer sehwag bats, the faster and more quicker sehwag bats. he completely owns the list of fastest 200s in tests having hit 3 of the 4 fastest 200s in tests and its not just tests, in odis he is the only player ever to reach 7000 odi runs facing less than 7000 balls in odis Link to comment
goose
The Telegraph (UK) chose Sehwag as their player of the decade. Link to comment

Zap_Brannigan
No. Sehwag is inconsistent in ODIs. How much match shewag won for india with his batting. Enough to propel us to #1 Link to comment
akshayxyz
Agreed he was not consistent in ODI's. But his impact on Test Cricket is a bit too much. To summarize - he has succeeded( success criteria defined by system) - on his own terms- without following system's rules. (technique, stirke rate etc etc). He has shown the cricket world ( test cricket) - what they have not seen before. In those terms Ponting and most of the others have been ordinary. ( there are many other players who have been as consistent as he has been). Only other person I can think of is Kallis - who have been doing unthinkable - consistently performing across all formats in all departments of the game. Ultimately all boils down to what are the parameters to judge "player of decade", since no such parameters have been laid down unambiguously - the outcome "ponting" is more of a perception (of a handful of people) than a quantifiable assessment. akshayxyz
To summarize - unless someone ( or a qualified group) sit down and define a set of quantifiable and unambiguous parameters to evaluate "player of the decade", people will continue debating over individual perceptions and will hardly ever come to any agreement (or it will take a long time and based on convincing skills of an individual) one more thing - such set of parameters (weighted) have to be locked before commencing on any evaluation, otherwise people will keep jumping in and claiming a certain parameter was more important than others Link to comment
