triam Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 ARR has copied songs, I would try to provide a list later. The Oscars and Grammys are not what they desire to be, they are as much of populist contests as anything else. Back when India started winning Miss Worlds and Miss Universes there was a theory giong around that, these contests are rigged by beauty product companies who try to corner upcoming markets (at this time India was still considered a developing country). The more I see the hype with respect to Slumdog and the song "Jai Ho" the more I feel this could be rigged as well, by the western studios and recording companies to corner the growing Indian multiplex industry. Gulzar, Rahman and Sukhwinder are all greats in their own way, whether they won Oscars or not. BTW This years grammys sucked, Single woman best song, wow epic fail. Beyonce sucks as a singer so does that song.
Zap_Brannigan Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Now i know what it is to be part of a pakistani board...full of conspiracy theories without an utterance of evidence..Bravo lads!! Lurker, you can name 100 musicians better than him but i can name only one(globally). It is personal taste and more people will agree with me(not in this board though). Oscars, Golden globe and Grammy (much little) are the 3 most prestigious awards a composer can get. Not even the Beatles or Spielberg would give it a miss. Comparing it with Filmfare awards (which gives awards to whoever is hot that season) is a huge disservice.
coffee_rules Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 ARR is basically a reflection of our times(read NRI affect), me thinks. Yes he is a great artist and all that but hardly the best we have produced. I can rattle 10 music directors that I think were much better than him. This could very well be a matter of personal test but I very much suspect that if a list of top 50 Hindi songs were compiled ARR would get more than a handful of mention. Gulzar on the other hand is a complete genius who may very well make a case of the greatest genius we had in the field of lyrics, and thats saying something considered we have had pehelwaans ranging from Sahir Ludhianvi to Gopal Das Niraj. Although I was probably more ecstatic than most when ARR won Golden Globes(I remember getting overly excited in a thread at ICF while the GG were happening Live), I have started to get a bit miffed at ARR showing up at every second award everywhere ranging from Oscar to Grammy to mohallewaala Latin beats. I thought the man had a reputation of being recluse and shunned award functions and crowd. Apparently when the felicitation comes from the West it is much to ignore. xxx Rahman nominated for yet another international award Oscar and Grammy-winning musician A R Rahman [ Images ] has been nominated for yet another award -- excellence in musical scoring for 2009 by International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA). He has been nominated in "best original score for a comedy film" category for Couples Retreat, his first venture into mainstream Hollywood, along with James Newton Howard (Duplicity), Marvin Hamlisch [ Images ] (The Informant), Alexandre Desplat [ Images ] (Julie & Julia), and Debbie Wiseman (Lesbian Vampire Killers). IMFCA, which has members from around the world, will announce the winners of its Sixth Annual Awards on February 26. Founded by Mikael Carlsson, it is an association of online, print and radio journalists who specialize in writing about original film and television music.
