NEW DELHI: Describing Sachin Tendukar as 'Kohinoor' of cricket, former captains Kapil Dev and Ajit Wadekar on Friday said the milestone man should be conferred Bharat Ratna - India's highest civilian award. The record of highest International runs (31,041) and centuries (93) already by his name, Tendulkar on Wednesday became the first cricketer in the history of One-day cricket to score a double hundred in Gwalior. "Sachin is the Kohinoor diamond of the game of cricket. This cricketer has unmatched talent and you can't find another Tendulkar ever. I think, he should have got the Bharat Ratna," Wadekar said. India's only World Cup winning captain Kapil also supported Wadekar's view and said Tendulkar very much deserves the honour. "Sachin has touched several milestones during his 20-year career in the international cricket. He certainly deserves the Bharat Ratna. We will be very happy if he gets the highest honour of the country," Kapil said. Kapil, though, said his views would be the same even if Tendulkar had not achieved the rare feat of scoring an ODI double hundred. "Even if Sachin would have got a duck in this innings, still I would say that he deserves the honour. No decision should be taken on the basis of performance in one match, but I am keeping in mind his overall contribution," he added. Another former captain and former selection committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar echoed the same sentiment. "If any player deserves the Bharat Ratna, it must be Tendulkar. He must get the award," he said. Wadekar also hoped that Tendulkar would continue to play even after the 2011 World Cup, to be co-hosted by India Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. "Sachin has proved with his fielding how fit still he is. I think, he can play for at least two more years after the World Cup next year." Wadekar, who has also worked with Tendulkar as coach of the national team, supported the view of former England captain Nasser Hussain that Tendulkar was better than even Don Bradman, the iconic Australian batsman. NCP demands ‘Bharat Ratna’ for Sachin Mumbai: The NCP today demanded that the country's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' be conferred upon batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar for scoring a double century in one-day internationals. The NCP made this demand after the master blaster had made in unbeaten 200 runs in the second one-day international match against South Africa at Gwalior yesterday, thus becoming the first ever player to reach the 200 run mark in a single innings in one-day internationals. 1. Tendulkar got the Arjuna award (outstanding achievement in sports) as early as 1994. (Note: some outstanding players like Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan have not received this award though I see Zak getting it in near future)
2. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1998 (MS Dhoni is the only other cricketer who has got this award)
3. Padma Shri in 1994
4. Padma Vibhushan in 2008

He has undoubtedly got the due respect and recognition for his achievement as a sportsman. As Bharat Ratna is the GREATEST and most prestigious civilian award given by the Indian government - I am very happy that it has not been awarded to him as of yet. It clearly shows the importance of the award. I personally think that he will get the award(only deserving sportsman living in India) - but only after he retires. P.S. Trivial comment - I am appreciative of these awards as Viru is the only other cricketer in the current indian team who comes close to Tendulkar in awards list - Arjuna Award(2002) and Padma Sri (2010); and rightly so! He has made some game-changing contributions - triple hundreds, etc. No other cricketer in the current team is more deserving than at MOST an Arjuna Award. NOTE: Dravid, Ganguly, Kumble all are Arjuna award and Padma Shri recipients!

Huh ? Do you even know what Vishy Anand has achieved ? In a competetive field uncomparably bigger than cricket. It is like comparing the competetive field in Asian games to the Olympics.
