rabinjackman - I wanted to chip in with a small line. Cricket is NOT a game ruled by numbers and stats. Cricket is a game which produces numbers and stats. So these are a by product. They dont rule the game.

:hatsoff: ur point is taken for a true cricket connoiseur the visual contests between batsman n bowler takes more importance... a tendulkar cover drive.... a Lara square cut ... A Mcgrath delivery in the corridoor of uncertainity... a searing Shoaib yorker.... A Warne delivery uprooting the stumps from behind the legs ..... ................ and then there is another cricket fan.... who loves statistics..... how may 100's, how may 6's, highest score....batting average , strike rates.... these stats also contribute ...rather enhance the aura of a player.... ............... i accept both the kinds..... :two_thumbs_up: Don Bradman wouldnt be so talked about without his stats... for us who havent seen him.... his stats prove his greatness....

No... beacause the arguments made in favor of gavaskar wud most probably be theoretical... as in .. different ere... tougher pitches / condition .......he faced better bowlers.... less protection... etc how do we know if tendulkar wud or wudnt have performed like him or better than him under same conditions? statistically tendulkar would seal the debate..... *************** Best thing to do is what you do...... forget statistics.... enjoy the game.... no need to waste energy arguing.... :) coz die hard fans wud never yield irrespective of the evidence

This is my first post over here... i am a member in another forum where this same topic almost caused a India - Australia war :giggle:
Good of way getting publicity. But you are not the first one. Many of them came here with their theories and stats, self-pwned themselves and never came back again. :giggle: Welcome anyways. :)

Every Tom, Dick and Harry is compared with Tendulkar while the same Tom, Dick and Harry's keep reiterating Tendulkar is the best that is there. Guys that have plenty of time in hand wasting their time clutching every possible statistics to prove Tendulkar is not the best there is. It's been Ponting, Yousuf, Inzi, Dravid, Hayden, Lara and to a lesser extent Sehwag to name a few. Meanwhile the juggernaut of Tendulkar rolls on and on. Hundreds after hundreds, runs galore just continues. All the nigh sayers have vanished in thin air after every season. Tendulkar himself never has claimed he’s above the rest, he’s calmly got on with his job.

After reading all the comments posted here i have realised a strange thing.... no one has bothered to comment on the actual stats put up.... the comments are mainly based on the lines of "Tendulkar is above stats" "Stats are piece of crap" the stats i have put up actually show tendulkar to be better than the others.... people have basically seen my nickname.."rabinjackman" assumed me to be australian.... assumed the thread to be pro-Ponting and posted their comments.... wow :hysterical:

Then there are those who are really persistent they keep trying in hope of finding that flaw; now the funny thing is at this point they'll think they have achieved something big and proved their point, but they've already forgotten the numerous ways they failed and the numerous way in which Sachin is greater.

Ricky Ponting made his Test debut on Dec 8, 1995 Now i will minus Sachins stats before this date so that we can assume both players played during the same era.... this is to negate some comparison criticism wherein people say Sachin played against better bowlers before Ponting's debut blah blah.... .........................Mat.... Inns.... NO..... Runs..... HS..... Ave........BF......SR......100..... 50 Ricky Ponting..... 142.....240..... 27.... 11859.... 257... 55.67.. 19897...59.60....39...... 51 Sachin Tendulkar.128.....216.... 22.... 10964.... 248*.. 56.51...19922. ..55.03...39...... 41 Sachin has scored 39 hundreds in less innings.... with a better average.... :--D Lets do the same comparison for ODI's, negate Sachin's performance in the period before Ponting's debut. Ponting makes his ODI debut on Feb 15, 1995.... SO comparing the two from Feb 1995 onwards..... ................... Mat...Inns...NO..Runs.....HS.... Ave...... BF......SR.....100....50...... 4s...... 6s Ricky Ponting 338...329...37...12564..164.. 43.02..15642.. 80.32 ..28....75.... 1112.... 153 Tendulkar.....352... 344.. 31.. 1483.0 200* 47.38. 16913.. 87.68.. 43... 72.....1671.... 161 Sachin is WAY better over here....... in terms of average , 100's and strike rate....

You don't get it mate.. you have just started here. Couple of posts above I mentioned there has been so much stats analysis here about all aspects of Sachin's batting proving him better than the rest and lesser than a few. Not many are keen reading through the stats. That shouldn't stop you from posting what you want though. I'll be one of the folks here that won't be going through every piece of stats presented here, sorry :(( I fully understand you are trying to prove Sachin is better than a few good ones but I won't really be keen reading every possible inning, MOM, strike rate, batting vs minnows, batting vs Aussies, overseas and at home.... the list goes on and on. I just go by my eyes, I've watched many great players over the years and need no stats to back up my opinions.
