India’s position in the ranking table at annual cut-off date of April 1 was confirmed after New Zealand went down to Ricky Ponting’s men by 12 runs in the second ODI on Saturday. This means even if New Zealand wins the remaining three ODIs, it will not be able to leapfrog India which sits on 122 ratings points, an ICC release said. The second place in ODI rankings means that India will win $75,000 in addition to $175,000 for being the number-one side in Test cricket. Australia will receive a cheque of $175,000 for its number-one position on the ODI Championship table. Meanwhile, young Indian Suresh Raina (659 points) rose a rung to 15th in the batsmen ranking list, headed by his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni with 819 points. Senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar (762) was static in fourth place while Virender Sehwag (694) and Yuvraj Singh (682) remained 11th and 13th, respectively.

There needs to be a bigger incentive for these things, its great that the current players still take pride in it. But I worry future generations may not care so much about just being #1 (I hope I am wrong)
