Who said The Mongoose is a 'slogger's' bat? Its a bat, like any other cricket bat. You can play absolutely normal defensive shots against it, both against pace and spin and against full pitched and short-pitched bowling. We've been so used to the image of the cricket in its current dimensions that some of us find it hard to digest any deviation, but I dont see any problem in welcoming it into the fold. Sure, the bat has been obviously designed to promote power-hitting and bat speed, but hey, whats wrong with it? After all, it could promote more exciting strokeplay, specifically the horizontal bat shots like cuts and pulls. Who does not want these in a game of cricket?
Out b4 sermons on how IPL represents India's yekanomic clout. :P

Why not? If the bowlers can innovate' date= fabricate slower balls and master revere-swing, why cant the batsmen follow suit as well? Because Batsmen alreday have the biggest invention in Cricket - FLAT pitches.:winky:

hey guys that bats tiny, a smart bowler will surely come up with a ball which will need the batsman to use the upper half of the bat, which in the case of the mongoose does not exist.. wait n watch... i have lot of confidence in the bowlers of our genration.... a crack will be discovered and used to send the mongoose towards extinction..... hopefully

I agree with King Tendulkar partially. I think there are a lot more things for the batsmen to cherish for being called it a batsman's game : Flat Decks, Shorter Boundaries, Very light weighted bat with some helluva wood on it, Field restrictions that are mandatory, Batting powerplays,Free Hits etc. These things always tilt the balance in the batsman's favour, and the bowler has to scratch his head and think of finding a suitable plan to combat all the above given situations. The pressure has to be tackled by the bowler more than the batsman, even though it takes just one ball to dismiss the batter. So why give a batsmen another opportunity by introducing a "Mongoose Bat" to again make the bowler change his plans and prepare a different set of plans against a Mongoose batter. This is certainly ridiculous, the crazae for boundaries should not let the quality of cricket down, i would equally love to see a high scoring game with a low scoring encounter like the KXIP and CSK game.So why is it that only bowlers have to suffer in this game, there must be a balance between the bat and the ball to a certain extent at least. On the other hand, it would be welcomed in a T20 because it would be intresting to see what are the bowlers plans against the Mongoose Batters, it will be different than to an ODI because, neither will the bowler look to flight the ball much anyways in T20, and the same will apply here, in a T20 the plan wont change much but the line of attack may change, so it would be good to see what variations does the bowlers bring to capture the Mongoose. So i welcome the Mongoose in T20s only.

Reading the above posts i see that most do not mind the mongoose only in T20. Fine i accept it. But than similarly why not allow more than one bouncer per over in T20...these days there is enough protective gear for the batsmen to protect themselves from the danger ones......there is this opinion that people only want 6 and 4...i cannot comment on what others want but i can speak for myself...i enjoy a tough competition between the bat and the ball....it gives me a high which a match full of bat or a match full of balls does not give. If this goes on we may as well as replace the bowlers with the bowling machine....1st it was thought that T20 was a game of only batsmen...but bowlers innovated to prove that school of thought wrong...but again there came innovations to negate the innovations of the bowlers. All i ask for is an even-stevens scenario..if you allow the Batsman to get an upper edge even allow the bowler to get it. I agree with the above statement that the bat doesn't matter the batsman does....very much summed up Jumbo who said in response to his plans for the mongoose in today's game: 'I plan for the batsman not the bat.'

Why not? If the bowlers can innovate, fabricate slower balls and master revere-swing, why cant the batsmen follow suit as well? I think the game needs a healthy dose of hooks and pulls and the Mongoose is almost custom-designed for those, given how it significantly increases leverage and decreases strain on a batsmen. In short, the energy expended by a batsmen to execute a pull shot in the Mongoose will be far lesser than the energy required to play the same using a regular bat. And because of the increased leverage, there will be increased bat-speed, leading to more power.
I dont know where you are getting the information from, marris, but this bat is not designed for cuts or pulls. This is designed for the drive. Designed to drive bowlers to despair more like it. It was embarrassing watching the ball sail almost out of the stadium with simple loft shots the other day. There was no question that it was enhancing the overall distance Hayden could put out with the Mongoose. By the way, my point is that bowlers are not allowed to do more vis a vis reverse swing. And pray, why do you call the slow ball a fabrication? I see it just as a natural progression.
Dont know what you mean by 'designed to obliterate the yorker'.. The bat is the same length as a regular cricket bat, only the handle is longer. And reg. the fears that the Mongoose might prove to be the shooting range for batsmen to have target practice at the bowlers, well, we all know that Gilly smashed a super 100 against Lanka using a squash ball in his glove, but that does not mean everyone who's gonna use a squash ball can do the same.
It is designed to obliterate the yorker. If you look at some of the material on the Hawkeye site as well as read the interviews of its producer it has been amply said that the bat is designed to lift and provide leverage to the ball - even when pitched full into the crease. That is why I called it the 'Yorker Obliterator'. There - that term sounds nice :). The squash ball is a whole different argument. Perhaps a different thread is called for that. Gilchrist had a technical flaw to correct which he used the squash ball. That is precisely why not everybody is going to get help when using a squash ball. Was that a performance enhancing tool for Gilchrist? You bet your last coin it was. But it is typical of the ICC to say yes to that because it rains sixes and brings the crowd in. That is what is sad.

It really has no overall effect on the game, if your good enough to use it then fair play but most players could not use it effectively.

Im hoping someone at my club purchases a Mongoose so I can give it a bash sometime, in fact I might recommend we invest in a club Mongoose that gets used when things are getting really desperate.

Batsmen game keeps becoming batsmen friendly. Now ICC should make some changes in cricket ball to something like a football size ball made out of light rubber so that every delivery can be hit easily out of the park. Also it wouldn't hurt to replace three stumps with one stump and I say take out the LBW rule.

How the hell did MCC approve such a bat? If this has got approved, I'd say I'll be applying for my new Coconut bat, madeup of Coconut branches too..
