Ryder has been out been out of international cricket for over six months with an abdominal injury but proved in his first class comeback for Wellington this week, where he hit 103 against Otago in a Plunket Shield fixture, that he is ready for the World Cup. Ian Butler and Aaron Remond also join Ryder and Mills on the comeback trail in an experianced side that includes the retention of Scott Styris and Gareth Hopkins, who were both standout performers in the Chappell-Hadlee series against Australia earlier this month. Daryl Tuffey and Neil Broom were not considered because of injury while James Franklin and Peter Ingram are notable omissions. The squad includes one new cap in Rob Nicol from Canterbury. Nicol was one of the top all-round performers in the doemstic Twenty20 competiton this season where he scored 237 runs at 23.57 and also took eight wickets (with an economy rate of 7.35) with his handy off-spin. It was these figures that Black Caps coach and selector Mark Greatbatch said in a statement was too hard to ignore. "Rob Nicol comes in to the side on the back of some very good domestic form, particularly in the shorter form of the game," Greatbatch said. The Black Caps will take some confidence into the event following their semi-final finish in England last year and recent super over win over Australia in Christchurch. Indeed Greatbatch believes his side has the right mix of players to be a force in the shorter format of the game. "We are excited about the side and believe that they will go well in the tournament," said Greatbatch. "We have a mix of players who are competitive on the world stage in the Twenty20 format. Obviously we will need to be consistent with our performances and build momentum through pool-play. "We think we have some very dynamic batters, who can be lethal in this form of the game. Our bowlers are also very effective Twenty20 performers." The ICC T20 World Cup runs from 27 April until 16 May. New Zealand are based in Georgetown, Guyana during pool matches and play Ireland, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. The Black Caps then travel to Barbados where they play either South Africa or Afghanistan then either Pakistan or Australia. The team then moves to Saint Lucia where they play either England or Ireland, before the competition moves to the semi-final stage on May 13. There is no place on the trip to the West Indies at the end of this month for Matt Prior, England relying on Kieswetter behind the stumps and accommodating Yardy as an extra spinner and Bopara's batting. South Africa-born pair Kieswetter and Lumb's inclusion gives England exciting new Twenty20 options at the top of the batting order. Bopara returns after being dropped following a poor run of form in last summer's Ashes and then being left out of England squads throughout the winter. Both the Essex batsman and Lumb have made recent eye-catching runs in the ongoing Indian Premier League. National selector Geoff Miller explained the advantage of deploying Kieswetter as an opener, and therefore freeing up a place lower down for either an extra specialist or another bowling option. 'On the recent tour of Bangladesh, Craig Kieswetter showed what he is capable of in international limited-overs cricket - and as a wicketkeeper at the top of the order, he gives us options down the order.' Another significant inclusion is that of Cape Cobras all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt whose only previous appearance for the Proteas was in the International Pro20 against Bangladesh in 2008. Two players - Wayne Parnell of the Warriors and Justin Kemp of the Cape Cobras - were not considered because of injury. Charl Langeveldt of the Cape Cobras and Loots Bosman of the Dolphins, who were not available for the 2009 World Twenty20, also feature in the squad. "I am delighted that we have Graeme Smith back from injury to lead us in this campaign," commented coach Corrie van Zyl who was involved in the selection process for the first time since taking charge of the Proteas. "At the same time it is sad to lose players of the calibre of Wayne Parnell and Justin Kemp. "Rory Kleinveldt will be a good like-for-like replacement for Parnell. "He's capable of opening the bowling or operating at first change and he has also been a regular death bowler for the Cobras which is an important area for us.
