Its a long one but do read it...its quite good and brings out the US attitude: During 1990s the US seventh fleet was considered to be the most powerful force in the world. The seventh fleet consists of aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and cruisers. To all those readers who don’t know as to what a fleet means, it is a plural noun meaning a group of war ships belonging to a same force. A fleet is generally under the command of a fleet commander. This event world famous story that displayed the attitude of the US navy. When during one of the fleet deployments in the North Atlantic Ocean the seventh fleet of the US navy came across the Canadian navy and the conversation between the two navies is brought out below… At about 2340 hrs on a December night the officer of the watch of the leading ship in the formation gets input from his ops room about the presence of a small clutter 50 nautical miles ahead. He orders his ops room to find the CPA(closest point of approach) and TCPA. At 2348 he receives information that the CPA is 0 and TCPA is 2 hours. The officer of the watch gets nervous and tries to contact the ship ahead. He finds that the ship ahead was not revealing her identity. Hence he got more suspicious that the ship ahead was a war ship. So he informs his captain. And then the conversations between the two ships start. US navy: This is a formation of US naval ships engaged in exercise. Contact right ahead of us come in please… Canadian navy: US naval ships good evening to you. This is the Canadian navy speaking. Go ahead… US navy: Canadian navy this is the US navy seventh fleet. I find that we are making good a course that makes good a CPA of nil from you. Hence you are asked to alter your course and pass away from me leaving a margin of minimum5 miles. Do you copy that? Canadian navy: US navy ship I understand that you are a fleet of ships engaged in exercise but I am sorry to say that I cannot alter my course. Hence you are requested to take necessary precautions and keep clear of me. US navy: (agitated by the reply) this is the captain of the ship speaking. I ask you to alter your course and keep well clear of me. I am a fleet of ships and I have right over you (by rules). Canadian navy: US navy this is the Canadian navy speaking. We once again ask you to kindly alter the course and maintain the minimum CPA as I cannot alter my course. US navy : (all ships of the fleet hearing this conversation between their leading ship and Canadian navy gets equally agitated). This is the fleet commander of the US seventh fleet speaking. We are a formation of ships. We consist of an aircraft carrier, three cruisers, four destroyers, six frigates and eight missile carriers. I hereby order you to pass away from us and keep clear of us. Canadian navy : US navy we fully understand that you are a fleet of ships and consist of an aircraft carrier, three cruisers, four destroyers, six frigates and what not?!?!. But I am sorry to say that I cannot alter my course and I once again request you to alter course and keep well clear of me. US navy : Canadian navy this is the fleet commander speaking. I fully understand the consequences of showing you the way down to Davyjone’s locker. I understand that it will lead to a diplomatic and military issue between the two nations. But keeping the safety of my fleet in precedence I will take such action so as to safe guard the safety of my ships and men onboard. And so I give you this last warning … “Canadian navy I order you to alter course and keep clear of me or else you will force me to show you the way down to Davyjone’s locker. In a minutes time my guns are going to fire at you….†Now only a few nautical miles away….. Canadian navy : (stunned and psyched) US navy I find it very stupid that you are asking a light house to keep clear of you. How on earth am I to move and keep clear of you dirty heads……
