yoda
yea, but i mean when you got all these military folks, don't they know how to get it to one of their choppers than asking a boy to carry it to the top of a building? i did like it overall though...quite funny and great special effects...but expected better given all the hype about folks clapping at the end of each show, etc.

THX_1138
Movie Review: Sunshine Danny Boyle directed this science fiction thriller and brought to it the same genius seen in the psychological thriller "The Beach" and the action-horror flick: "28 Days Later". The premise of the movie, which is explained in the opening minute seems rather incredulous, but remarkably is quite possible theoretically: The Sun is dying, well not dying, it seems that the output of the nuclear reactions occurring in the core of the star is being inhibited by larger subatomic particles that are slowing down the photons generated in the core and thus the energy output of the Sun as observed from the Earth is considerably lower resulting in a climatic up wheal best described as 'fcuking ball freezing cold'. Hence, the solution, which is absolutely incredible in itself, is to blast the inhibiting sub atomic particles using a massive nuclear bomb. Let me pause there and reassure you that this is very much a likelihood, not as much as in, it will happen, but as in, it is theoretically possible in the words of the movie's science advisor who receives his paycheck from the CERN institute in Switzerland, site of the latest and largest particle accelerator where the first graviton (if they exist) might be artificially created and studied. Resuming the movie, the bomb that should revive the energy output is to be dispatched by a unique space ship that has a crew of 8. A Captain, second to him a com officer, a computer specialist, two pilots, a botanist, a peculiar psychologist and the genius physicist who designed the bomb. Their ship, Icarus 2 (yeah a bit tongue in cheek, considering that Icarus did eventually fail in his objective), sets off from the Earth now in a state of perpetual and severe winter towards the Sun for their several year journey. The journey has several perils, in particular the duration which requires the ship to have a self sustaining atmosphere and water recycling facility and food production. Enter the botanist played by a mild mannered and rather mature Michele Wei. She handles the elaborate garden that uses a variety of ferns to remove the carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen (believe me this is easier said than done considering that this experiment was attempted at a massive scale in Arizona in the Bio Dome project but did not succeed), and the garden generated the vegetables the crew can consume. The ship must also have a reliable power source as none can be trusted to last as long as their journey without periodic maintenance… well that the easiest of the lot: the Sun! the space ship is actually protected by a massive shield (not unlike one soldiers took into battle) which is covered with solar panels to produce the energy required. Things seem to be going well, save for the occasional skirmish which is really the result of several people being confined to very small places for a long period, till the ship enters the dead zone. No, not some psychic zone where you achieve clairvoyant abilities, but simply that they are so much closer to the Sun that the ambient radiation and magnetic distortions make communication with the Earth impossible. It is in this zone that they pick up the automated distress signal of the Icarus 1. A similar expedition that left several years earlier but then went peculiarly silent and evidently did not deploy its payload since a nuclear explosion on the sun was never observed from the Earth. An executive decision later, it is agreed to rendezvous with the Icarus 1 in order to salvage its payload to increase the possibility of success of the expedition. What follows is disaster after disaster as the crew is tested, in their devotion to the mission, their faith in its possibility of success, and their desire for self preservation at the expense of everything else, possibly even the mission. Yet a question looms, why did this happen? Was this some act of God that was intended to deny humanity the right to exist, and thus any interference with the divine powers was bound to be met with either failure or further vengeance, or was this humanity refusing to be frozen out of existence. A debate that turns bloody when the Icarus 1 is finally boarded and it seems that its crew did not fail, but had infact either decided to abandon their mission, or were possibly murdered. Of course, if they were murdered, the murdered would have remained, could he have survived alone on the ship, and if he did murder the crew, his objective rather clear: to prevent a revival of the Sun, would he permit Icarus 2 to succeed? The movie has some stunning visual effects, a very small commentary on religion that I would not recommend reading to much into, and it has a beautiful exploration of human obsession. Be it obsession with pride, and thus, shame which might result from failure; devotion, either to the divine or to its creations; self belief or ability to deny the impossible odds with unwarranted optimism. While not destined to be a classic, it certainly is better than the other psychological drama with a space setting (as an allegorical reference to the journey into our own minds) such as Even Horizon, and Solaris (the Soderbergh version, not the Tarkovsky one. That one is pure genius).
