Ponting is perhaps the most overrated skipper in recent times. Sangakkara is fast climbing up the ladder. Even if he is 15% as erudite with his captaincy on the field as he is with the mike Sri Lanka would not be suffering as much. Border, Taylor and Waugh all three were better captains than Ponting - each in their own way.

Chappel got it right, building a side and being credited for having one is very different. Ponting is a good captain for sure and in his own words "its easy to win a title, but keeping it, thats a whole different story". Even with Australian cricket being a factory, someone still ahs to manage the talents to ensure the result is achiveved. Its a lot more achievements than what some of the captains in his generation have done.

They lose at home in a decade, they lost second time Ashes in England in last 5 years, they lost to India as well comprehensively. Both are overrated as captains. I'd go for Allan Border (now that's team building), and Mark Taylor.

Yep. I still remember in the 1st test of last ashes series, how he preffered Hauritz and even North while they just needed 1 wicket and Ben hilfenhaus was never given an over after picking the 9th wicket.. Aussies had a great chance of winning that match.. Heck, he can't even maintain a decent overrate.. :finger:

I voted for Mark Taylor also.. Steve Waugh was a very close 2nd. I still think Australia missed out on its potential greatest captain.. Shane Warne!

Yes, fantastic captain and mighty player. But still would like to rate (ironically) Ian Chappel above him as a captain alone. Australia's record under Chappeli is very good IIRC.

Anyone has an opinion on Bob Simpson? I considered him since he came out of retirement and won the 1978 series against India 3-2 with virtually no great players. India's closest defeat in a series. You guys should see our losing scorecards. it would have been a 4-1 or 5-0 win for India against any other team.

Well Ponting now has the most Test and ODI wins as captain + 2 WC's. He is also the most successful cricket player in both formats too. His captaincy is very under-rated imo.
