saneindian Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Perhaps Abu Nacheem has been ignored for the same reason why Rayudu was ignored' date=' ie, ICL. But other bowlers like [b']Sangwan or Awana could have been considered. Srikkant has lost the plot of selection with vision for long term. Is his term ending this October or not? He'll be completing 2 years then. Chandan what exacly have those two done to get considered for a India A spot? Awana had 26 wickets in 8 matches at 31 and Sangwan had 20 wickets in 7 games at 41. Didn;t much in the duleep trophy either. Compare that with Ganpathy's ranji record last year, add to it the fact that he had a 5 wicket haul in the duleep trophy as well, I believe its just that he is getting his chance. In fact I was quite surprised when he was initially ignored for India A. Bowlers: Iqbal Abdulla, Sudeep Tyagi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Jaskaran Singh, Bipul Sharma, Jayadev Unadkat Batsmen:Cheteshwar Pujara, Abhinav Mukund, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Saurabh Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Manoj Tiwary Allrounder: Ganpathy Keeper: Wriddhiman Saha The squad is far more balanced with Ganpathy's inclusion, though I feel Nayar should have been chosen ahead of Kedar Jadhav. 8 specialist batsmen in a 15 member sqaud is too many IMO.

Sane, I've seen all the three bowlers in which Ganapathy looks least talented. We've seen earlier how a man with excellent temperament but nearly no talent man, Sanjay Bangar, failed to make an impression. And we don't even know about Ganapathy's temperament, even if it is clear that he lacks talent. Sangwan has certainly fallen off from the big achievements in his first season but he is very talented swing bowler and Awana is even better than him. Apart from the obvious facts, don't we have to give as many chance as possible to available seamers, to unearth a useful one, considering how our seamers go down like flies in international cricket? What purpose will a bits and pieces player serve? Selections have to be done with a vision for long term, not randomly like Srikkant has been doing in his term.

Chandan , both Awana and Sangwan though talented , struggle to hit even 80 mph in domestic cricket. I have nothing against them. But to say Ganpathy's selection is wrong isn't correct IMO. He has been one of the rare successes as an all rounder in the domestic cricket and has earned a spot on the India A team through his performances. Else whats the purpose of playing in domestic cricket. As for him being like Bangar or not, well let him play for India A before making any judgement about him. If he isn't found to be good enough he wouldn't go very far, but before making that judgement why not give the guy a proper chance to prove himself.

Chandan Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I don't agree. When there is so much of gulf in the domestic and international cricket, selectors have to go by judging the talent, not just the stats in the domestic matches! What have these domestic giants ever proved at the international level? Good talent has to be spotted and given chance, instead of a player who is unlikely to even get a breakthrough in the national team. And secondly, as I mentioned, we need to unearth seamers, yes SEAMERS, not bits and pieces players with a view of the coming world cup and also with the huge amount of useless ODIs that we play so that good test seamers are well rested for the tests and important ODIs. Selection has to be done with a vision, not just by consulting the stats book! between the team in Zim and this we have Dinda, yadav, vinay Kumar (now injured), Mithun, Dhaval Kulkarni, Unadkat, jaskaran, Tyagi this is beyond zak, nehra,PK who are being rested and the people out of favour in sree, munaf, ishanth etc THe only all rounders are yousuf and Jadeja both spin bowling options. in fact i doubt india has tried any seam all rounders in recent years with the exception of pathan. don't you think we are giving enough seamers a chance ? Zak, Nehra PK Ishant Sree Irfan Dinda Yadav Mithun Kulkarni Tyagi Unadkad How many of the above can be used for meaningless ODIs (ie not bilateral, or ICC events)? Apart from the first 6 we haven't unearthed any. Vinay Kumar, the highest wicket taker of Ranji, was miserably found out and couldn't stand the rigours of even one international match! How many others have we already discovered? None, till now. And we have to keep giving chances to candidates who can be used as one of three seamers in the ODIs/T20s. No point in giving chance to someone who'll have no utility in international matches.

I agree we have to discover seamers. what if this bloke turns out to be a an ordinary seamer who can bat more than a bit say an albie morkel types. who knows ? he will probably have more international utility than sending 120-130 types who can't bat for nuts !
saneindian Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Good talent has to be spotted and given chance, instead of a player who is unlikely to even get a breakthrough in the national team. Dhawal, Jaskaran, Unadkat all have been picked based on talent alone. Didn't have a great domestic season or didn;t do well even in IPL. So to say selectors have no vision isn;t quite right. On the bolded part, I think you are being unfair to Ganpathy. He may be a bits and pieces player but unless he is given a chance how would we know what he can do? Why prejudge his skills?

He will NOT turn out that way as I've seen him in few matches. I'll be really glad if someone like A Morkel appears but he is no where in the horizon as yet. Have you seen him play?

Gunner_Mania Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 forget defining it how much of him have we seen to put the finger on it ? :dontknow: It is not just him, I keep hearing this term bandied about on the forum, I just wonder what exactly people mean by international class?

I think Awana is one of the quickest bowler in domestic cricket he was chosen in Scorpio speedster who won that contest for being the fastest..
Chandan Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 His injury had nothing to do with rigours of international match' date=' he got injured playing football.[/quote'] It is due to enhanced workload and fitness regime only. Or how else can you injure your knee, just by playing football? LINK There is a detailed article about how domestic players are unable to keep up with these standards and often fall short. I can start a thread but hardly anyone here is interested in serious discussion.

LINK There is a detailed article about how domestic players are unable to keep up with these standards and often fall short. I can start a thread but hardly anyone here is interested in serious discussion. The article doesnt say anything about how he got injured. Anyway I heard from the commentators that he got injured while playing football and Harsha also says the same here Coming to your other point, I wouldn't blame the player if the fitness regime used at domestic is sub standards compared to the international level. Its the board that has to take the blame. Lets be honest Chandan, the board doesn't give a sh*t about the domestic circuit. The domestic circuit is established and in place, it will keep providing mediocre players as rule and some exceptional talent as an exception. The only time the board will have any interest in the domestic circuit is when it is time to sell the TV rights.

Board doesn't care about international cricket as well, or else we'd have good good variety of pitches, adequate rest between two series, a proper schedule drawn at least an year before. All board cares about is money. And I don't think any cricket fan or the selectors, who are actually former cricketers, do not know that! Then why not form a vision for just the next series as well as for a series five years after? If the cricketers like Ganapathy will be given chances, where will India go? It is not as if board cares about the fitness of the national team. It is the coach and his team which decide about these regime and state teams can do that too, But no one cares. The state board do not care, the BCCI doesn't care and even the players in general do not care apart from a select few who have the intelligence to understand its importance. In such a secenario the short sighted selections of Srikkant will push India back where no talents will get chances and real talent might not come to the fore.
Gunner_Mania Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 In such a secenario the short sighted selections of Srikkant will push India back where no talents will get chances and real talent might not come to the fore. I asked you this on twitter as well, if all seelctions is blamed on Srikanth, what are the other 4 selectors paid for?
Chandan Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 If all 5 selectors would be equal with equal rights, why would one be called a chairman? Other zonal selectors present choices from their zone and it is the chairman who has the last word on who'll be chosen and who will be not chosen. Can't you see the obvious patterns of selection when More was the chairman, when Vengsarkar was the chairman and when Srikkant is?
Gunner_Mania Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 ^ I didn't know that the chief selector can veto all selections and choose his own. I absolutely don't see a point in having 5 selectors if the chairman is going to have the final say and there is no majority vote and I think it is a waste of money having 5 paid selectors when only one has a say. You might as well have scouts rather than selectors.

I absolutely don't see a point in having 5 selectors if the chairman is going to have the final say and there is no majority vote and I think it is a waste of money having 5 paid selectors when only one has a say. You might as well have scouts rather than selectors. Yes. Nowadays there is hardly any point in having the zonal representations. But in 60s, 70s or 80s it did make sense because it was quite possible that a SZ selector won't know who the players are from EZ or NZ and likewise as games were not widely covered then. But now a days, we can easily do away with these zonal selections and have three selectors who have worked with TRPD and have seen young talents emerging all round the country because domestic system hardly tells us who the talented players with right temperament are. These three selectors will represent India and not any zone or state. For such a big country and talents spread so far and wide, we need planning with a vision and selection has to be done according to that. Right now we have a system which is outdated by say 25 years. Inspite of all this, it is only and only credit to the players who have come this far. But we can't expect to have 5-6 genius players always. And then the system will be cruelly exposed, though BCCI won't give a damn I'm sure!
