On what basis Sachin is getting a a group captain position? If India want to honor him give all the honorary sports award. This is setting bad example to all the real air force officers who have spent years of education. training & risking lives in battles and in air. Airforce officers dont have the luxury of picking & chosing battles they have to fight like Sachin has done before. I would sue the IAF if I was an IAF officer.

A demotivating step to air officers. Sachin is god of cricket and should not risk for any other.

Sachin to become IAF's honorary Group Captain on Sept 3

NEW DELHI: India's top cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who is not new to awards and honours, will be conferred with IAF's honorary rank of Group Captain. IAF chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik will do the honours at a ceremony here on Friday when the star cricketer will be inducted into the Air Force to be its brand ambassador, according to IAF officers. President Pratibha Patil had conferred the honorary rank of the IAF on the batting maestro on June 23 this year. The honorary rank was conferred on Sachin under the provision of granting honorary rank by Armed Forces to eminent personalities acknowledging their contribution towards the nation. "The President and the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of India is pleased to confer Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar the honorary rank of Group Captain of the Indian Air Force," the IAF had then said. The honour to one of India's greatest batsman came in recognition of his glorious achievements as a cricketer and sports icon par excellence. The IAF had in January this year mooted a proposal to confer the honorary rank of Group Captain. IAF feels that besides the recognition, his association with it would motivate the younger generation to join the Air Force to serve the country. When the conferment was announced, an elated Tendular had said he was proud to be part of IAF family. "It is indeed a great honour that I have been considered for honorary Group Captain in the IAF. As an Indian I am proud to be associated with the dynamic force and I shall do my very best to be brand ambassador for the force," he had said. Before being felicitated with the honorary rank, Tendulkar had gone through a process of familiarisation with the IAF and training in basic military practices and drills. In 2008, India's World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev had received the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Territorial Army. Till date, 21 eminent personalities have been granted honorary ranks by the IAF, the first person being the Raja of Jawhar Raja Yashwant Rao, who was conferred the Flight Lieutenant rank in 1944. Industrialist J R D Tata was made an honorary Air Vice Marshal in 1974 and the last one to get such an honour in 1990 was industrialist-cum-aviator Vijaypat Singhania, who is now an honorary Air Commodore. Once Tendulkar receives the honour, he would be the first sports person to be conferred a rank by IAF and the first personality with no aviation background to have got this honour.

To all those kids who are complaining about Sachin being awarded this position and producing such gems such as " Other officers will be demotivated", "sue IAF", "he is just a cricketer" - should know that it has been a time bound tradition of all military in all countries to bestow civilians with honorary titles since time immemorial. There might be various reasons for the honour. Recently a young boy dying from cancer was made an honorary fireman by the Ney York Civic dept. Many, mnay civilians have got such award in all countries. And of course, the air force officers know that its a token award and being the adults they are, wouldnt be 'demotivated' by whats obviously a military culture. In fact, almost all officers in theri life time would have seen some civilians being awarded 'posts' in some form or the other. Its a part of military tradition

JRD TATA getting it was probably justified as he was the pioneer of Indian Civil Aviation but sachin getting this honour is just uncalled for.Some big shot in the Air force just wants to get on the sachin bandwagon for some publicity.Why not give it to someone from the paramilitary force or the police who has done some act of bravery...that would be a motivation and a validation from another arm of the security force.

Which part of the "its just a token post", "honourary posts are part and parcel of every military agency", "no one in the military really cares about these posts", and its just an award for "outstanding achievement", dont you undertand behen ji? Its just like Amitabh being awarded an honurary doctrate without attending a single class. Its a token award, no one cares, and everyone understands. why is it made such a big deal? As I said, recently, a young kid dying from cancer was made an honourary fireman by the NY civic dept. Would you protest that too? the boy was only 5-6

Actually look other side as well. If Sachin becomes an Airforce Office, indirectly he will be promoting Air Force, We may get lot youngster drafted into Air force just because of that. :--D

Anyone complaining abt this honor given to sachin must be a real stupid person .. This is just to pay respect for his work ethics and the same work ethics which IAF stands for .. He isn't going to fight any war .. This is just a symbolic gesture given by a great institute to a great person. .. This will inspire youngsters to join IAF and other military institutes .. Sachin is infact serving the nation by conveying the message to his followers .. You must have seen many celebrities getting honorary degrees at various universities .. Its same like tht ..
