Sachin Tendulkar, now an Indian Air Force officer

New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar is going to fly high quite literally and give Top Gun a new meaning. The master blaster is soon to become an officer of the Indian Air Force with the Air Headquarters having finalised plans to make him an honorary Group Captain. It's the first time a cricketer will get this honour. There was considerable debate as to what rank the great batsman should be given. Wing Commander and Squadron Leader were deemed too junior for the national icon, who has 20 years of top class cricket under his belt. The Air Force has forwarded the necessary files to the Defence Ministry. But the Prime Minister's Office and the president will have to give their consent before a formal announcement is made. It's not very often that the armed forces give civilians honorary ranks. Last year the Territorial Army made film star Mohanlal an Honorary Colonel. It conferred the same honour to Kapil Dev, while industrialist Vijaypath Singhania was made an Air Commodore for holding a world record in high altitude hot balloon flying. Link :isalute:

IAF proposes honorary post for Tendulkar NEW DELHI: Another feather is set to be added to star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's cap with the Indian Air Force sending a proposal to the Defence Ministry to confer on him an honorary Group Captain's post. "IAF has proposed to honour Sachin Tendulkar by granting him the honorary rank of Group Captain. We have sent the proposal to the Defence Ministry and they are considering it," an IAF official said. Once the Ministry clears it, the file will go to the Prime Minister's Office and then to the President, the supreme commander of the armed forces, for approval. In 2008, India's World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev had received the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Territorial Army. Tendulkar is arguably the best batsman in the history of cricket, having amassed some 31,000-plus runs in Test and ODI cricket with a staggering 93 international centuries under his belt. The 37-year-old is hailed as perhaps the most complete batsman in the history of the game with no real chink in armour. He not only the highest run-getter in both Test and ODI versions of the game but also the only player to have scored a double century in a One-Day International. One of India's most decorated sportspersons, Tendulkar has won the country's highest sports honour -- the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna -- and the Padma Vibhushan award. The IAF had earlier conferred the honorary rank of air commodore on industrialist and aviation enthusiast Vijaypat Singhania. :icflove:

Wow, what an outstanding gesture! After a record of such outstanding service to the nation, its only fair that such a honor be bestowed and everyone involved has every reason to be proud. Obviously, I am talking about the Indian Air Force. :D

I have never understood all these honorary posts and honorary post grad degrees etc you get for being a famous sports personality even when you don't have knowledge about these fields? Or is there is a deeper meaning behind this? Just trying to understand.

On what basis Sachin is getting a a group captain position? If India want to honor him give all the honorary sports award. This is setting bad example to all the real air force officers who have spent years of education. training & risking lives in battles and in air. Airforce officers dont have the luxury of picking & chosing battles they have to fight like Sachin has done before. I would sue the IAF if I was an IAF officer.

Sachin average against Pakistan is 42 odd and fallls to 35 odd if you take out that 194 not out innings. This inot whopping by any standard since all of those matches were played on Pak/Ind roads.

Honorary posts in specific fields should go to deserving persons who have contributed and have expertise in that field not to someone who have done well in another field. Sachin is probably first ever Air Force officer who dont knwo how to fly a jet.
