I've been arguing with a friend that srt rd sehwag are among the top of the indian all time greatest bats... Can u pls give me some counters to someone who keeps harping on 70 and 80s bowlers and pitches were more difficult and pitches tougher then...so Srt rd sehwag cannot have done as good as gav colonel jimmy or vishy! I tried but some super icf members can give me good points as well to counter

Vengsarkar was nothing but a useless batsman And Gundappa V was an OK batsman -- probably had a lot of talent, but never lived upto his billing as indicated by his averages. End of Discussion !

Thanks Mamu & Bheem. Bheembhai, I agree what ur saying, and this is *only Tests* So we'll leave ODIs out. The argument this person keeps throwing is the lack of quality fast bowlers after Waqar&Wasim era, and pitches more bowlers friendly during Vishy, Vengsarkar times. Do you see merit in that?

Vengsarkar does not really enter this debate - those four hundres at Lords were the only overseas tons he has, averages 37ish away from home. Good batsman I am sure, but cant be compared to these guys

Bossbhai said it. No comparison between these players. Gavaskar has a few qualities that Sehwag might wish on one of his off days. On the other hand, Sehwag has a few qualities that Gavaskar would have wished for - all the time. :) Again we have not even considered stalwarts such as Laxman and Ganguly. The present middle order is the best out there in the world. That is why we competed so very well against Australia in their home.

Away from home, both Vishwanath and Vengsarkar have a horrible record. That takes away a lot of shine away from their very good career records. As for the comparison, the current top 5 of Sehwag, Gauti, Dravid, Sachin and VVS is the all time best top 5 we ever had. These 5 would perhaps end up being in the top 6 test batsmen in our history with only SMG from the previous era there.
