Emerging Players Tournament 2010

Where has Abhishek Nayar disappeared? Is he still injured? Didn't he hit a 100 in a practice match vs SA early in the year? And if at all Irfan Pathan is still in the scheme of selectors, he should have been chosen as well? Unless we play him , how we will we know if he's ready or not? It would be a folly to pick him in internationals and expect him to perform straightaway.
I keep saying this' date=' but Pathan is intent on working on his strength and fitness over the next few months.[/quote'] Nah. I've given the reason for Irfan's omission in the thread 'blundering ways of Indian selectors' thread. Just read the first page.

I think Irfan is probably seen as too old to be in an emerging players squad, personally i cant believe Parthiv Patel (who will never be good enough for India) is even captaining the side, surely if they wanted someone with experience they should have picked someone who has performed well at the top level like Karthik, Irfan or even bring back Ganguly!! Or picked a future India captain like Pujara.

Im not too worried at Piyush being there as he can be a good ODI spinner and its not like we are blessed with a plethora of spin options, we need a good look at the guys we do have Laughable that Piyush did not get to tour Eng or Zim, though he went with the senior squad to the t20 WC. Was he injured? I think he played a T20 in Zim? Iqbal Abdullah wasnt great in the Ltd overs matches in Eng so can't argue with Ashwin/Piyush IMO. But then neither has Jaskaran so go figure... If Jaskaran were replaced with a fit Tyagi or Nechim Ahmed and Jadhav with Pandey it would be ideal.

What about Netravalkar' date=' Sangwan?[/quote'] Not only them but also Abu Nacheem, Abid Ali, Love Ablish, Awana and plenty others. What about Tyagi?

Sangwan hasnt exactly set the domestic circuit alight after a good first season has he? Love Ablish I ahve seen bowl in the IPL (admittedly not in Ranjis) and Im not an expert but he did not seem very good. Its only Jaskaran who's place is not justified as far as the pacemen go, I dont think you can argue with the rest being there. And highly unlikely that Jaskaran will play IMO (unless there are injuries) with 4 other pacers in the squad. Id be tempted to go with both spinners in the final 11, as both can bat a bit, and 3 pacemen. Id think Piyush and Ashwin can cause some problems.

You just can't be serious Sooda. Vinay Kumar is an emerging player for limited overs cricket? We've seen what happened to him when he was given a chance, haven't we? What part of his bowling were you impressed with and how do you think that this emerging bowler from India will serve Indian cricket in international matches? As for other:
indian squad Parthiv Patel (capt & wk), Cheteshwar Pujara (vice-capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Saurabh Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha, Abhinav Mukund, Umesh Yadav, Jaidev Unadkat, Vinay Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaskaran Singh, Piyush Chawla, R Ashwin.
I don't mind Yadav or Kulkarni or Unadkat getting more chances to prove them as they at least showed some potential. Jaskaran and Vinay didn't even show that. And how many times will Chawla emerge? He has already played 2 tests and 22 ODIS and if hasn't emerged as yet, does he have any more chance to do so in future? Why was he chosen? Why could we not choose any other young spinner instead? Abdullah was dropped for the poor performance in tha A team, so was Pandey but Jaskaran retained his spot. How do you make sense of that?

I did not watch Vinay Kumar play for India but he was the top wicket taker in the Ranjis last season and has been good for a few seasons for Karn. , that merits his inclusion in this squad. Yes he has played Intl cricket but not much of it (just that one ODI right?) and this is a good oppo to see what he can do. If anything Im surprised he's there as he probably should have been in the squad for the triangular series in SL. Im sure his FC record is probably significantly better than any of the other names we have mentioned in this thread and he has certainly achieved a lot more than people like Nechim Ahmed!!

Yeah youre right about Chawla, but its a indictment of the paucity of our spin resources. Chawla should have toured Eng with the A team, or gone to Zimbabwe. He has bowled well for India in ODI cricket and is still young, did well in county cricket last year. Its not like we have plenty of spin options to choose from (frankly Id like Powar and Kartik to play test cricket) so we need to go back to Chawla.

THAT, makes no sense at all. I agree :P no consistency... Kedhar Jadhav is supposed to be a decent attacking batsman I think, watched him in the IPL a bit. But Pandey was top Ranji run getter last year, should have been here, very harshly treated. A random guy Bipul Sharma toured with the A team, and will probably be never heard of again.

Don't mind Sooda, but your thinking needs a bit of consistency as well. Emerging players' tournament is a limited overs tourney where four teams will play a 50 overs and 20 overs tournament. How does Ranji performance, which is a FC tournament, ie, each match is a four day match, matter here? It is not a regular India A TOUR where you play few FC matches, few List A matches or even T20s. So how does the four day cricket's stats matter here? And then you jump straight from FC matches to T20 matches and talk about IPL performance, which again has no significance here as T20 matches are just the side show of this tournament. But I don't blame you. Even our selectors might have gone with this muddled thinking while choosing this squad and it is not surprise then to see their choice!

How else would you decide who is good enough for the emerging players tourno ? Not the IPL I hope! Thats precisely what the selectors are doing it seems with the selections of Jaskaran, Bipul and Kedhar J. I am saying its totally wrong to go by meaningless T20 IPL matches to pick players for this tourno or an A tour, let alone the senior side So would you go by their domestic limited overs form? Is that how/why you think guys like Nechim Ahmed are better bets than Vinay Kumar? Historically all bowlers who play ODIs for India are picked on the basis of their Ranji form right? Its only over the last few years that U19 performances are given more importance and more recently the IPL You think Dhawal deserves his spot there then…Not sure how his domestic FC record in Ltd overs cricket compares to Vinay Kumar…

We have List A tournaments too, the Ranji One dayers and Zonal one dayers. Kohli and Sharma had come from that only. As for bowlers they are being blooded into international cricket if they have potential even without completing one single domestic season and the result is there for all of us to see. They forget even their action after one year grind. Example: Pathan, Ishant and many others.

List A records Vinay Kumar - 72 wkts in 43 matches at 23 Dhawal Kulkarni- 36 wkts in 24 matches at 26 Umesh Yadav- 10 wkts in 11 matches at 44 Abu Nechim- 6 wkts in 6 matches at 37

Yes. And who took how many for how much last year? You can't tell me that a twenty six and half years old bowler who debuted six or seven years back on the domestic scene is seen as an emerging player for India or are you telling me that?

Late bloomer, so what? He is only emerging on the international stage, thats what matters. Badrinath went on it last time. Numerous Aussies make their international debuts well into the late 20's. And youre changing tune a little bit from 'he is not good enough' to 'he is too old'. Do you think he should have been in the India squad for the triangular then? I do. He deserves a chance to show whether he is good enough or not, esp after being just selected for the India tour of Zim. As for now this can and should be treated like an A tour, its largely the same team that toured Eng after all...and its about the exposure he will get against near-international level opposition, so the selectors will have an idea about what he can do. That would have happened in Zim but unfortunately got cut off by injury. fact is he is better than the other names that have been mentioned here, based on what he has done in domestic cricket. You said it yourself, some guys have been pitchforked into the international stage after barely any FC cricket straight from U19s, no time to iron out any chinks in the less pressured domestic cricket enviroment and they are learning on the international stage. Lets face it, sadly that is likely to happen to Unadkat. Its good to see a guy who has been plying his trade for a little while -and doing well -get his due.

Yes Sooda. This is not changing tunes. If he is good enough at this age, play him now in the ODI. When did you hear a 27 year Australian getting chosen for their Emerging players tournaments? Yes. I do believe that if the selectors see any potential in him make him play in the trie series in Lanka instead of Ishant who is struggling terribly. Emerging players should be the young players just out of U-19 tournaments and of say 20-22 years old. Badrinath was a big wastage last year and we saw that. Why are we hell bent on repeating the mistakes again and again? Are the selectors scared him to throw against quality sides? If that is the case, then why send him on Emerging Players' tour either instead of a young bowler? It should not be treated as a A tour where the second best XIV of India will play. It is for young players with potential. If you have that much faith in Australian system then just check the emerging players squad they announce. It is basically their Academy team. Anyway as we discuss this, here is something significant happening here: Dinda will now head to Australia, along with with Manish Pandey, to replace R Ashwin and Sourabh Tiwary in the Indian team participating in the Emerging Players tournament. LINK So Manish Pandey does get a chance after all and Dinda too.

Agree with your point and hence want him to be given a chance in ODI directly, if he deserves and reserve this tournament for younger players. I don't want U-19 players to be introduced to international cricket straightaway and this tournament was a perfect opportunity to give players with potential an exposure and check how they do there in Australia.

^yep, heard about Dinda and Pandey going. Not sure whether replacing a spinner in Ashwin with another medium pacer is especially bright. But oh well. Good to see Pandey there finally. Also a bit strange that they selected these guys a few days ago and promoted them to the seniors already. Ha. Three cheers for forward planning. Surely they had some idea of the triangular squad they were choosing and knew Tiwary and Ashin would have been there. Vinay Kumar and maybe Yadav too should have been in Lanka, I thought the selectors finally decided that Ishant is not an ODI bowler, clearly not.

He has to go though the grind of yet another meaning ODI tourney.

So the squad becomes: Parthiv Patel (capt & wk), Cheteshwar Pujara (vice-capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha, Abhinav Mukund, Umesh Yadav, Jaidev Unadkat, Vinay Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaskaran Singh, Piyush Chawla, Dinda Likely starting 11: Dhawan, Mukund, Rahane, Pujara, Pandey, Parthiv, Chawla, Vinay/Dinda, Umesh Yadav, Unadkat

i think the pitches in australia will suit pandey better than the ones in england.
They might be pattas with little bit of help to the bowerls. The grounds they are playing are local grounds that are played by top regional teams in Brisbane. And its in the offseason. There will be a lot of dew in the morning. I go by one of the grounds regularly and not much is happening on the ground, and the square isnt even cut or being prepared. Plenty of grass on it atm.
