Parthiv Patel to lead India in Emerging Players Tournament July 13, 2010 Saurabh Tiwary will be one among several whose performance will be closely monitored in Australia Parthiv Patel, the Gujarat captain, will lead India's team in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia in August. Cheteshwar Pujara, who finished as the highest run-getter in the recent A-team tri-series in England, has been appointed Parthiv's deputy. The four teams - South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and India - play two competitions - Twenty20 and 50-overs - during a two-week period. Each of the 15 players selected in the squad participated in the IPL, and a significant number has played for India. Parthiv and legspinner Piyush Chawla have played Test cricket, while medium-pacer Vinay Kumar, offspinner R Ashwin, seamer Umesh Yadav and wicketkeeper Naman Ojha have had exposure in the ODI format. Among the players missing from the India A squad that toured England are batsmen Manoj Tiwary and Manish Pandey. Tiwary averaged only 19 in five limited-overs games, while Pandey 11 in as many. The Emerging Players tour is an important opportunity for Saurabh Tiwary, the left-hand batsman who impressed in the IPL and had a successful Ranji Trophy, scoring thee centuries in the Plate League last season. He was picked in India's ODI squad for the Asia Cup while on tour to England with the A team, but didn't get a game. Do the selectors see him as international player in any format? And Vinay Kumar? Was it not proven that he couldn't play against weak time like Zimbabwe or a second string SL? Why are promising seamers like Abu Nacheem and Awana ignored? Why can't we have Rayudu instead of Kedar Jadav? Tyagi? Is he still injured? PS: Emerging Players Tournament will be held in Brisbane, Australia, from August 8 to 20. New Zealand, South Africa and Australia will take part in the tournament, comprising T20 and 50-over matches. Dinda should have been there as well with RP Singh. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to get in Irfan and Yusuf as well. Are we grooming Jaskaran and Vinay Kumar for future ODIs and T20s? If indeed selectors are thinking on those lines, then God save India! Why are we choosing Chawla again and again, and if we really think that he is an emerging player, why wasn't he chosen gor the A tour? Selections are too random and lacking in any vision at all, and this has been happening since last 2 years. Where has Abhishek Nayar disappeared? Is he still injured? Didn't he hit a 100 in a practice match vs SA early in the year? And if at all Irfan Pathan is still in the scheme of selectors, he should have been chosen as well? Unless we play him , how we will we know if he's ready or not? It would be a folly to pick him in internationals and expect him to perform straightaway.
