Prior has been awesome with the bat for a while now. Dhoni has not been, he may play the odd good innings now and then. He'll have to do a lot more to be considered among the best Keeper/Bats

Poll was conducted this time last year.... And lets be honest if the poll was created now Dhoni would still win, this is ICF.

So people, Prior and Dhoni are two excellent specimens of keepers but who do you think is better? Prior has played 33 tests averaging 41.5 with 3 hundreds and 14 50's [thats not counting this test with his 84*] Dhoni has played 41 tests and has a similar average to prior [41.9] with 4 hundreds and 18 50's Personally I would back prior, has a superior record if you consider he bats in more difficult conditions in England and is also consistent under pressure.

Love the fact that we are specifically comparing tests, as the OP knows quite rightly Dhoni is twice the player Prior is in the short-versions of the game :cantstop: Prior may be better test batsmen, but in terms of wicketkeeping, there's not a hug difference (Dont think his performance in this test shows an overall view of his glove work in general!) Still, Dhoni plays a lot of cricket in the short-version game, ODI, T20 and IPL, and being captain of both test and club doesnt aid to his batting average in test cricket, he still does the job when required, so Im not complaining, a few words from sir ian jackass, and immediately you turn his "cricket wisdom" into a thread onto this forum! Typical english supporter taking his words as gospel

Well actually this is the first time they have gone head to head so it seems pretty apt to me, I could have bumped after Prior averaged 50 + in australia but it would seem irrelevent.

Thing with Prior is he eats nearly anything outside off stump so there is a fear factor generated from bowling there, not sure many WKB's have that kind of thing to distinguish themselves as solid Test bats in their own right. Impressed with him and today moreso under some pressure (though against a spent attack) - usually his big knocks are when the opposition has been shat on and he is rubbing it in their face. Dhoni is a better batsman than he is displaying though. Technically weird but he has more shots than just to retreat into his shell.

Who, me? I've never questioned Dhoni's prowess in ODIs. You seem to run out of arguments for Dhoni in tests and keep on trying to thrust ODIs in desperate attempts. :hysterical:

True. He really can take games away from the opposition because of the speed at which he scores - his last three hundreds have been 103* off 120 balls today, 126 off 131 against Lanka at Lord's a couple of months ago and 118 off 130 against Australia in January.

I wouldn't make a call based on a Test or series. Let's see how they do over the next couple of years. Problem with passing a judgement based on a match or series is that the sample size is too small. So far what we've seen is that Dhoni's achievements don't exactly align with the assessment based on your cricketing eye.

I haven't always been critical of Dhoni. Have always found his batting vastly overrated due to his ODI exploits, but still decent enough though he is a major FTB. It is his keeping which has gone down the drain over the last year, something I have praised on these very forums before. So, my cricketing eye can make out the decline, but the fan boys can't see it just as Bhajji fan boys have been living in denial for a few years now. I am not making any long term call, because Dhoni might improve and get his form back. However, on current form I am absolutely certain Prior is going to smoke Dhoni in the series because my cricketing eye can see it. His footwork, anticipation, movements behind the stumps are just plain poor at the moment.

That's why I am not passing judgement right now. It's easy to kick a man when he's down. I will give him enough time to prove this dip in form is temporary and not permanent. Of course if he doesn't improve and plays similarly in the Aus series as well that would be the time to decide on the future. Aus series is a pretty important one later in the year and I believe we have a pretty good chance at winning it and won't make any changes at this point. If Dhoni keeps on dropping sitters even then, he will have to either play as a specialist batsman or make way for someone else. But I want to give him every opportunity before saying that he's done.
