Income Tax enters semifinals Special Correspondent IN FULL FLOW:Tanmay Srivastav took ONGC BANGALORE: A clinical performance helped ONGC defeat State Bank of Patiala (SBP) by six wickets in the Airtel Rajsingh Dungarpur Corporate Trophy at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday. However, after a flurry of phone calls to officials stationed at the RSI ground, the bad news trickled in for the Delhi outfit. Income Tax had defeated MRF comprehensively by six wickets and with a bonus point. Income Tax tallied 10 to top the table while ONGC (9) found its semifinal hopes in tatters. Relishing the conditions Under overcast skies, Munaf Patel prised out the SBP openers Rakesh Rehni and Ravi Inder Singh. With Sumit Narwal (three for 17) and Praveen Kumar too relishing the conditions, ONGC was all set for a facile win. Sarabjeet Ladda's (39 n.o.) clean strikes lower down the order helped SBP score 135 in 45.6 overs and the meagre total hardly tested ONGC as Tanmay Srivastav (49 n.o.) and Gagan Khoda (45) shared an 83-run third-wicket partnership after openers Virat Kohli and Sandeep Sharma fell cheaply. Tanmay played some crisp drives during his unbeaten effort. Once the winning runs were scored in 22.3 overs, attention was riveted to the proceedings at the RSI Ground. MRF made 283 for nine in 50 overs, thanks to captain S. Sriram (58) and Venugopala Rao (82). Breathless pace Needing to win in 40 overs to top the group and nudge ahead of ONGC, Income Tax set a breathless pace through the quartet of Hiten Shah (50), Ameya Shrikhande (53), Amol Ubharande (76) and Jay Desai (56 n.o.). Victory was achieved in 35.2 overs. The opening pair put on 78 in less than eight overs, with Shah making 50 off 28 balls with eight fours and two sixes. His dismissal did not slow Income Tax's progress, with Shrikhande and Amol Ubarhande adding a further 76 in 7.2 overs. Ubarhande was eventually out for 76, the top score of the innings. MRF's innings was built around a solid 82 from Venugopal Rao, who put on 96 with Umashankar Sushul for the fourth wicket. Sridharan Sriram chipped in with 58. Parag Khanpurkar was the best of the Income Tax bowlers with 2 for 48. Income Tax will now head to Visakhapatnam where the semifinals will be held on September 5. This was Air India's third straight win. At Gymkhana, Murali Vijay's 112 (114b, 7x4, 2x6) and a flamboyant half-century by Rajagopal Sathish guided Chemplast to a five-wicket win over BSNL. The win was not enough to put Chemplast in the semifinals. When Chemplast was 110 for one, chasing a target of 289, news trickled in of Air India's progress to the next stage. Vijay put the disappointment behind and concentrated on the task at hand. After his departure, some lusty hitting by Sathish, who hit medium-pacer Joginder Singh for two sixes and three fours in one over during his unbeaten 68 (37b, 9x4, 4x6), hastened the finish. IOC qualifies despite losing a thriller Special Correspondent CHENNAI: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) qualified for the semifinals of the Airtel Rajsingh Dungarpur Corporate Trophy despite losing a thriller to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) here at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday. Group B's second successive last-ball finish precipitated a three-way tie, IOC, BPCL, and Tata Sports Club ending with a win and four points from two league matches. But IOC's net run-rate of 0.1402 enabled it advance to the last four ahead of BPCL (net run-rate: 0.0141) and Tata (-0.1025). Chasing BPCL's 134 for nine — the match was shortened to 21 overs a side because of rain — IOC appeared poised to progress emphatically to the next stage. The third-wicket partnership of 56 between Ravikant Shukla (47) and Rohit Sharma (37) helped IOC to 108 for two in 17.4 overs. The first signs of worry appeared when Rohit, who had slapped Aavishkar Salvi over point for six, failed to keep the seamer's yorker from detonating his stumps. However, Shukla assumed charge of the situation, carving and swiping Sreesanth for two fours in the 19th over. Manoj Tiwary rocked the India Cements batting line-up by forcing Arun Karthik to offer a simple catch; Badrinath was trapped in front and bowling Dravid with a ball that kept low. India Cements won by 25 runs and will meet the winner of Monday's semifinal between IOC and Income Tax, in Tuesday's final. India Cements won the toss on a batting wicket and made 275 for nine thanks to Vasudeva Das (93, 75b, 13x4) boosting the run rate from the middle overs.. Air India had to contend with India Cements' disciplined bowling. An 85-run second-wicket stand in 95 balls between opener Chandan Madan (46, 54b, 6x4) and Manvinder Bisla (53,66b, 7x4) kept Air India on the track but spinners Suresh Kumar and V. It is frankly depressing to see the level of cricket on show in this trophy. I wish things were different. If BCCI finds some way to make domestic cricket slightly more marketable, then I feel things would be fantastic for Indian cricket. There will also be downsides, but we can cross that bridge when we get there. The pitches are dead. So, I am not sure what sort of challenge these present to the batsmen. Even so, there is no new bursting talent on show out there. Which is even more worrying.
