Sushant Marathe (141 n.o., 230b, 7x4, 5x6) and Kaustab Pawar (101 n.o., 231b, 10x4, 2x6) engineered a convincing nine-wicket win for Mumbai over Karnataka in one semifinal on Friday, while in the other match, Punjab secured a 53-run win over Kerala thanks to Rahul Sharma's six for 58. Efficient batting Chasing Karnataka's 265 for nine for a place in the final, Marathe and Pawar ended the contest with 9.3 overs to spare. The left-handed Marathe, who was dropped in the slips by Sunil Raju off Adithya Sagar when he had scored just one, saw out the new ball, resisting deliveries outside the off-stump and dealing with ones directed at the stumps with compact defensive play off either foot. Pawar began less certainly than Marathe, but he grew comfortable against the spinners, milking them for ones and the occasional two. . Marathe and Pawar increased the rate of scoring after lunch. The first session yielded 76 runs in 37 overs, the second, 124 in 30, the third, 66 in 13.3. Marathe, who had looked tranquil until lunch, smashed five sixes in the next two sessions. Marathe then shut up shop to ensure his partner reached his hundred. With four runs needed for victory, Pawar clouted a four over extra-cover to move from 97 to 101. Tall problems In the other match, Sharma with his 6'4” frame and high-arm action combined to make his length extremely difficult to judge and his steep trajectory gave batsmen little clue of the ball's landing point. Kerala's chase suffered twin setbacks in the 10th over of the morning, the bustling Bharat Loomba bowling opener V.A. Jagadeesh and number three Robert Fernandez off successive deliveries. After that, left-handers Sambasiva Sharma (33) and Rohan Prem (39) steadied things before their 72-run stand ended in the fifth over after lunch when Rohan was run out. This triggered a collapse, Kerala slumping from 92 for two to 122 for seven. Good stand After that, C.P. Chasing Mumbai’s 284, Punjab were bundled out for 197 with off-spinner Vikrant Yeligeti wreaking havoc with a five-wicket haul. Punjab were off to a disastrous start as they lost three wickets with just 26 runs on the board. The Punjab top-order caved in to the accurate opening spell of right arm medium pacer Murtuza Hussain and left arm medium fast bowler Saurabh Netravalkar. Murtuza accounted for two wickets and Saurabh the third as Punjab were pushed on the back foot. Middle-order batsmen Viswas Bhalla and Taruwar Kohli resurrected the Punjab innings with a defiant 77-run partnership for the fourth wicket in 32.2 overs. Kohli top-scored for Punjab with 65 runs off 148 balls with seven fours. Bhalla played second fiddle to reach 42 runs from 121 balls with two fours. Yeligeti, returning for a second spell, ensured Punjab’s doom. The off spinner had a second spell figure off 10.2 overs, no maiden, 31 runs and five wickets.Though Perry Goel, coming in at number 8, made a brave 35 runs, Punjab were bundled out in 70.2 overs. Pigeon-holed between India's just concluded tour of Sri Lanka and the forthcoming Champions League at South Africa, the tournament is bound to miss quite a few leading players. Hours before the first match of last year's BCCI Corporate Trophy, an event that seemed unnecessary in what was already a busy season, Rahul Dravid and other prominent figures in Indian cricket talked about the importance of the corporates. In a world before sponsorships, advertisements and IPL, it was these corporates that provided the players job security. This tournament was the BCCI's way of thanking the corporates for having supported the players who are now their assets. A lacklustre inaugural event and a year later, the eve of the Corporate Trophy is in stark contrast. Two teams have already pulled out because the BCCI wouldn't pay for their accommodation. The India players have just returned from an arduous Sri Lanka tour and many of them are headed to South Africa for the obviously more important Champions League. Of the four teams that are to play in Bangalore, one had still not arrived as of this afternoon. ONGC, the one team with star players, trained at the Chinnaswamy Stadium's B ground and awaited their, well, star players. The Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians rightly chose not to grant this tournament List A status, despite the BCCI's insistence. This year's event, especially the Bangalore leg where six league matches will be played, could run into trouble with the weather. It has been raining everyday in Bangalore for quite some time now, and one of the two venues, the RSI Grounds, is not exactly known for its drainage facilities, or its equipment to ensure a quick start after rain. Having said all that, for players such as Sreesanth and Gautam Gambhir, who are returning from injuries, this is an important tournament to prove their fitness before Australia arrive for a two-Test series. The Irani Cup, the traditional domestic season-starter, is scheduled to start on the same day as the first Test against Australia, which could be an irritant for the fringe players hoping to break into the Test squad through their domestic performances. The Corporate Trophy and the tour game against the Australians is all they have now. As for new players looking to announce themselves, the Corporate Trophy is not the stage: not many will be watching. Format Originally four groups of four teams each. Since two teams have pulled out, it is now two groups of four teams each and two groups of three teams each. The winner of each group through round-robin makes it to the semi-final. The Group D matches that will unfold at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and RSI Ground here from Wednesday will pit ONGC, MRF, Income Tax and State Bank of Patiala against each other. With Chennai, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam hosting the other three groups, interest in Bangalore will centre around ONGC and MRF, which are relatively the stronger outfits and the contest between the two teams on Thursday will perhaps determine which one enters the semifinals. Led by Gautam Gambhir, ONGC is indeed a team to watch out for and it also features a medley of leading players ranging from the current crop like Virat Kohli, Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar to the older group like Gagan Khoda and Sarandeep Singh. The team had a training stint at the KSCA ‘B' ground but Gambhir and the trio of Kohli, Munaf and Praveen were missing. Gambhir, who is coming back after recovering from a knee injury, is expected to join the team ahead of Wednesday's clash against Income Tax while there in no clarity on when the other three players who have just returned from Sri Lanka would join the squad. MRF, which opens its campaign with the clash against State Bank of Patiala, has in its ranks skipper S. Sriram, S. Anirudha and the Rao brothers — Venugopal and Gnaneshwar. Toughened up by the extremely competitive Chennai league, MRF can never be underestimated. The weather though could play spoilsport as it has been raining in the city over the last week and the V. Jayadevan method will come into play if the skies open up. Income Tax scored 292 for six in 50 overs and bundled out ONGC for 121 in 30.4 overs. Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli both scored just one run each while Mithun Manhas was the top-scorer for ONGC with 27 as the packed batting card succumbed to Ajitesh Argal’s pace bowling, who returned with figures of 4/38. Amit Mishra too failed to deliver, going for 68 in his nine overs for ONGC. Tata, which elected to bat at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, scored 280 for three in its allotted 50 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 110 from Ishank Jaggi and 91 from Mandeep Singh. Jaggi's innings was marked by his ability to work the ball around for ones and twos: during his 130-ball stay, he collected 58 singles and 12 twos; he also hit four fours and two sixes. Jaggi raised 187 for the third wicket with Mandeep before putting on 51 for the unbroken fourth wicket with Nishit Shetty (33 n.o.). IOC began its chase in style.
