AT Ind XI: ODIs

If that's your line of argument then I have nothing to say. You probably don't even understand the difference b/w playing one or two quality bowlers in isolotation and playing an attack with 4 quality bowlers. For more on that you could contact Miandad on why he wasn't that successful against the WI as he was against some of the other sides. I haven't seen the stats because as I said before AT11 don't get picked based on stats alone. If that were the case then why bother with this thread, let the statsguru pick the 11

Sehwag didn't fare well in bowling tracks against quality seam attack in ODIs yet. Now I have absolutely nothing to say if you make crap up and select your ODI XI based on success against pacers in test cricket.

So then why don't you open with Ganguly, who has played better attacks and also averages better on bowling tracks. I understand that you are taking a gamble on Sehwag but wouldn't the chances of destroying the attack be more successful once a platform is laid? :P

It suits his batting style, ie replicate what he does in the tests. So Sehwag to open. :icflove: Dada can do a good job opening too, but he'd just watchfully play off the initial overs and accelerate more towards the end of the innings. Putting pressure on bowlers makes it much easy for the middle orders rather than saving it all for the end.

I haven't seen Sir Viv Richards bat so low before in any type of X1. But I guess there is always a first time :P

The only person you could swap with is Kallis, but having JK there gives the side a good middle order anchor. Or drop Kallis play Richards at 4 and put in maybe Hussey Richards is a fast enough scorer to bat there of course, better than him not being in the XI at all. rett, I see your pt re: Yuvraj etc...but having say Gavaskar there would mean wed lose one less wicket perhaps but score at too slow a rate. Yuvraj is a superior one day cricketer. Ganguly is one of the finest ODI openers in history, he cant really play in the middle order. Plus you could argue that the WI quicks bowling on aaj kal ke pattas would be a bit less effective and fearsome than they were in the 80's...

When Gavaskar played, there was no PP. You were suppose to keep wkts in hand. It was a time when they said that if you had wkts in hand by the end of 30 overs, you could double your score. 250-260 was considered as competitive If Gavaskar were to play in PP era then I would imagine that he would play his strokes well. If you see his record post 1983 in ODIs, it's pretty good and he is right up there with some of the best of his time Formulating AT11 is an imaginary process. You have to assume everyone to be at their best and playing on sporting wkts. It is an exercise where you put past players in to today's game and today's players in to past and try to create a balance to pick them. You also have to put the likes of Yuvi, Jadeja, etc in to history and see how they would have fared against the WI quicks for example. You have to ask yourself the question would Ganguly have been as successful playing the likes of WI quicks, Lillee and Thompson on sporting wkts After doing all the imiganation, I picked Gavaskar to open in the ODI AT11. You may not agree with that based on your thinking process and how you rate the player but at least we could exchange our perspectives :D

^yeah thats a fair point, Gavaskar was no slouch when he was in the mood. Has scored a 90 ball ton vs the WI once and yeah thats the best thing about pciking AT teams is the hypothetical debates. :)
