I have seen many students who have done their B.S here & come to Masters. The quality of education & overall program in the US Bachelors program may be good but the students who come out of Indian schools are much more competitive. I did not find any of my peers who entered their Masters program with a Bachelors degree from an US school, any more extraordinary than the ones from Indian schools. If anything, i found the reality to be opposite. In short, if you are a good student, whose goal is to get a job & settle down in the US, the path that involves the least investment, is a Bachelors in India & grad program in the US. There is simply no difference in the overall quality of the student regardless of where he did his Bachelors. With booming salaries for IIM grads, even money spent on MBA studies here has become questionable. Simply put, US schools no longer have the "charm factor" they once used to. Hmm, its been different from what I've seen. Anyways, there's still time, I'll probably see this when I start doing my Masters :hic:

I would have loved to take course in Economics, Political Science, Philosophy etc. during my undergrad but all I studied was Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Chemistry. I had to fulfill those desires while in graduate school here. And even there it was only in the last year and half to two years when I was done with all courses and most of my research could I afford that luxury. It would have been impossible to take such courses if I had just done my Masters.

Rajiv Posted May 8, 2007 Author Posted May 8, 2007 Re: US Dollar dip I came to study in the US in 1992 ( Hofstra University B.B.A ), being the only child my folks were missing me and were luring me to come back and also buy me a new car...foolish me, I wanted to come back to my for my gf, friends etc and left everything Worst decision of my life! period Went to study in Switzerland, then back to US in 1997-99 ( Bryant University ) and did some computer courses in Toronto as well

ask4me Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Re: US Dollar dip dhondy I was planning to come over for my bachelors but circumstances didnt permit at that time and NO money wasnt the issue, but yes me being the only kid was :wall: . so I did my masters in management here and didnt wanted my dad to pay for my masters and, thanks to me being who i am, didnt wanted to do PHD though I had schols from one of the Top 5. I took the student loan which is still left to be payed and hence the US Dollar depriciation is not a happy news. And Just wanna add in the same breath since many guys mentioned US education as a previlidge, that getting admissions for master's in USA (if thats one's only objective, which is true for a HUGE percentage) isnt too hard today, BUT the competition gets tough (still not like in India) if we are looking for some TOP ranking schools/Programs( you can throw in MBA, medicine in here ) and then you weigh in the $$$$ required , situation becomes little difficult (but still not a huge lot since student loan limits have been increased and are easier to get). Lack of info among students regarding the admission procedures could be one issue that can weigh in, but Internet and forms like orkut etc are taking care of that as well. :hmph:

Believe it or not, more than 25 people from my school itself(out of 100) are studying in the US. there are 6 people from my class in school, studying here at the same university as me. add to that 4 more from junior college class. So basically, I knew 10 ppl at my uni, before even landing here! as for visas, they check everything now, properly.. post 9/11, its become very strict...

Would have had to pay 10000? per annum had i been considered overseas student but luckily got my Indefinite visa in time. Now, figure this, Scottish Executive not only pays for my tuition fees but also gives me 2500 bursary(dont need to pay back) Plus 1500 loan (0%intrest only pay back when i get a good 20K+ Job) just for studying here. Richest student around you bet!
