tennis fans/players?

Re: tennis fans/players? Nice vid. Although, Sampras was past his peak by then. Federer is the best tennis player ever. I am sure that Sampras, even at his peak, couldn't have beaten him. The only aspect of the game where Fed loses out to Pete is on the serve. Leaving the serve aside, he has a more complete game and can play near-flawless games on any surface. Sampras could never do that...not with the same consistency anyway.

Re: tennis fans/players? On hard courts/ grass? I dont know maan. The one thing fed does have is that ability to come with a unbelieavble shot to get himself out of a potential hole. The opponent is stunned and it all goes donw hill for him from there. Sampy probly didnt have that same level

Re: tennis fans/players? Fed has some way to go before he can be talked of in the same breath as Pete... But my all-time fave is Boris Becker... No one like Boris... Samps dominated for one whole decade.... and Fed has to show tht...

Re: tennis fans/players? I think Pistol Pete would have outgunned Fed on grass and hard courts but Fed would have beaten Pete on clay because Pete was simply clueless on clay. My favourite tennis player back in the 90s was Jim Courier. He was such an awesome clay court and hard court specialist. He was decent on grass too. He could have won many more GS than what he won(4) had it not been for Sampras. My all time favourite match involved these 2. The '95 Australian Open QF. 5 setter. Courier won first 2 Sampras last 3. Sampras was crying(because his coach had a tumour and was hospitalised and his gf had just had a horrific car accident) and smashing aces at the same time. Unforgettable contest!

Re: tennis fans/players? Jim was a real bulldog... i kinda liked him too...very pugnacious.... But he had a height disadvantage and to top tht, his serve toss was very low...But man, his booming groundstrokes... one of the most powerful groundstrokes after Agassi....

Re: tennis fans/players? I used to kinda like Iceberg-Edberg... The coolest player I have ever seen.... he was an out and out grass court player though.... Personally, i play better on grass than hardcourt... cos my style is serve and volley... but unfortunately, most common courts in US are hardcourts..... there is a tennis club nearby which charges $3500 a year for membership and they have grass courts.... but too much to pay for just access to grass courts...

Re: tennis fans/players? Question for all you tennis fans - which of the 4 Grand Slams do you enjoy watching most ? and give your reasons. My favourite slams in order; 1) Roland Garros 2) US Open 3) Wimbledon 4) Aussie Open I love clay-court tennis. The rallies are longer, the players are far more skilfull and it's the true test a tennis players' stamina and concentration. Some matches can be boring, but a lot of them are fascinating. It's thrown up some very entertaining matches in recent times. You can complain about the fact that it's the same old players challenging every year, but it's not much different at Wimbledon or the US Open either. I don't like grass court tennis that much - too many "cheap" points.

1. Wimbledon The beauty of serve and volley. Where the men separate themselves from the boyz. 2. US Open The ambiance of night time tennis. Seems to level the playing field a bit and bring out the best in all the players. 3. Australian Open Anything's got to be better than the French open. 4. French open Where do I begin? Whoever thought playing tennis on facking clay can be interesting should be shot. Slow, boring tennis which only an exceptional talent like Nadal can make me even take a peek.

Re: tennis fans/players? US open -- the 'fairest', and most difficult championships to win. Decent surface, not too fast, not too rubbery like the Aus. The crowd is a bitch, and if you are a non-american playing an american, then you can bet that there will be NY-ers shouting in your ball toss. probably the most mentally taxing to win -- Fed showed how when he beat Agassi in 2005. Wimby -- history: the BORG, johnny mac, becker, petey, and now federer...there's a mystique. And the s&v game is beautiful to watch. you have to be fast as hell, and have a lot of variation: good court coverage, volleys, serve, slice...tests everything that the french doesn't. French -- anything is better than the australian. And I guess topspin backhand crosscourt to topspin backhand crosscourt rallies aren't all that bad. Plus they say, "egalite" all snobby and shyte. Aussie -- no character, sifarishi, quota selection etc. I would much much much rather watch indian wells, rome, paris...

Re: tennis fans/players? Egalite just means deuce in French, where does the snobbish element come from ? and being required to wear all-white and courtesy in front of the Queen before the start of every match isn't snobbish ? Besides, serve and volley is on the decline. How many GENUINE S & V's have you seen in recent times ? Henman was the last of a dying breed. Federer is probably the closest. Too many one-trick ponies at Wimbledon anyway. If someone like Roddick can get to the semis every season, that just gives you an indication of how much "skill" is required...

Re: tennis fans/players? yes, thank you...i know egalite means deuce in french. The french just have this thing about their language, and there is a definite vive la france element to that tournament -- much like the paris masters (which nobody came to this year, and the french got very upset, mon dieu) -- I said snobbish as a positive, it adds character. I think it's cool. I rate it below Wimby only because of personal preference. S&V is dead because of these big heavy racquets that allow powerful returns even off mishits -- but those who can s-v definitely have an advantage. Roddick gets there only because of his serve, which is damn near unplayable on grass. The fact that roddick doesn't get to the sf in the french only means that the french is a more specialized tournament -- and you can't argue with that. it is full of top-spin tattus who can't do anything on any other surface -- exceptions duly noted.
