In the shorter format of the game he has spent a further 112 matches as the world’s number one batsman peaking at 887 points in 1998 now I get the picture.. but that statement is quite confusing..

Yes, it's nonsensical. Absolute baloney. VVS, if you look at the graph, Sehwag wasn't no.1 in 2004. He was no.2 at Kanpur, also against SA. This is the first time, I believe.

Yea that is what i said. He was no.2 then. That was the best he reached until now. With his style of game you can't really say he will stay there for long. But longer he stays there is better for India.

here is the attempt to clear the confusion - once and for all Nov 1994 - Test#1274 125 tests later i.e. Test#1399 was played sometime in early 1998 So it is very much possible that he was #1 all through these 4 years. Can someone confirm that?

There was serious tussle between him and Lara. Every time Lara made one of those huge scores his ranking just shot up. Owing to his huge individual scores he was able to hit the top rankings quiet frequently. hmm, I guess I got it finally... I think 125 tests is cumulative sum of the # of tests played by all teams, during the (cumulative sum of) time-windows when he was ranked #1.. this does not mean he was at the #1 at a stretch of 125 tests.. nor does it mean that for those 125 tests he was merely in top-ten.. now i can sleep.

With a rapid 165 in the Kolkata Test, which India won to stay top of the ICC rankings for teams, and 109 in Nagpur before that, Sehwag has displaced good friend and fellow Test opener Gautam Gambhir. Sehwag sits top of the pile with 863 points, while Gambhir has dropped to fifth position with 824. He had tremendous success in 2009 - an average of 108.98 in six Tests - and in the four Tests he has played this year, Sehwag already has two centuries. He was also the recipient of the prize for best Test innings, for the second year running, for the ESPNcricinfo Awards where his audacious 293 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai was chosen over four other nominations shortlisted for the award. South Africa's Hashim Amla, whose three centuries in three innings against India earned him two Man-of-the-Match awards and the Man-of-the-Series accolade, has leapfrogged to second place in the rankings with 842 points. Sachin Tendulkar, who also scored two centuries in the two-Test series with South Africa, occupies sixth place with 805 points.

Another good performance by the 28-year-old Australian in the second Test starting in Hamilton from Saturday will potentially give him the No 1 position which he first achieved during the Ashes series in England last year. Two other Indians, Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar lost one place each to drop down to sixth and seventh respectively. VVS Laxman stuck to his 14th spot while Rahil Dravid slipped one place to occupy 17th, among the batsmen in top 20. Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting, the mainstay of Australia's batting line-up, have both dropped in the latest Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen which were released on Thursday, a day after the conclusion of the second and last Test in Hamilton. Clarke, who had number-one ranked Sehwag firmly within his sights before the start of the Test with just 16 ratings points separating the two, has dropped to fifth position after his contributions of 28 and 63 in the team's second and last Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.
