street smart captain' date=' very good keeper , fighter with the bat[b'](more so in ODIs), calming and confidence boosting influence, facilitating all the greats to perform at their best etc etc.
Thanks for answering. I am not sure of his spot in test cricket if he doesnt pick up his performance.

He is as safe as anybody. I would say only gambhir' date=' sresanth, dravid and to some extent rainas place in danger atm.[/quote'] Yes, definately. Dhonis spot is not in danger atm. There is no replacement for him. But he definately needs to pick up his batting.

his batting average is not bad a a keeper...its just this year he has not done well...otherwise...remember Bangalore test against Aussies...2008, remember lords test against England, Test against Pakistan with 148 when the team was chasing a massive total, can remember many other innings and you are forgetting...these all players were playing before he was captain too.......it cant be a coincident that all the players are clicking at the same time in his captaincy....its his calmness and Gary's influence that this team is doing well....otherwise remember the later part of Greg Chappel...these same players were then too.. Dravid is also averaging 40 in the last 4 years as a specialist batsman and Dhoni is also averaging 40 as a wicket keeper batsman...and its a phase which every player goes through...he will come good very soon And the most important thing...it is a team game...we cannot credit a single player for one or blame a single player to lose...if a team wins...all players need be credited as much as anyone

But India were batting second...and PAK had score of over 500 in the innings and India were around 280 for 5 and No..it was Nagpur test in 2008 (I am nt sure bt it was against Aussies) and that 148 is still one of the best aggressive innings by an Indian against fast bowling....along with Sehwag's 319

I think you are being overly critical of Dhoni. Off late he has not done very well with the bat and also had a bad match with the gloves against the Aussies recently. But there are many aspects about his captaincy and man management which go unnoticed. And on top of it he's a very safe keeper and does not make any fuss about it and hence goes unnoticed. Also this team has an aura about it which we did not have beforehand, only Dada's team came close to it. Even under Dravid, though we did very well in tests, but there was never a sense of aura withing our team. And I think this has to be credited to Dhoni and Kirsten. And go back to Dada's era of captaincy,I don't think he used to be that consistent a performer with the bat. There are a few innings which you can count and that's that! He generally struggled with the bat, but still all the credit, which is well deserved,is given to him for building a team. A strong team without a strong leader would never give you the results. If a group of men are doing well then, they are being led properly and this applies to all aspects. Just to reinforce my point, this is what Gary has to say about MSD's captaincy
Yes, he does lead by his gut feel. He has got very instinctive ideas on the game. He has been absolutely critical to the success of this team. He is a calming influence. He does not get overly emotional through success and failure. He expects individuals on the field to be able to perform and that is team management's responsibility to make sure that we have prepared them in such a way that they are ready to perform. We have a strong trust relationship. We have not had a cross word in three years because we have a lot of respect for each other. We do have difference of opinions and we discuss them If we are undecided on something, we will ask some of the players their thoughts and come to a decision. He is an incredible captain in terms of the way he has the feel for the game. I have not seen many in the world have the flair for the game like he does. One thing you would have noticed in his two years as captain of the Test side specifically is that how the seamers have grown to play a massive role in this team. They have got as many wickets as the spinners have got on flat wickets because he uses the seamers cleverly at various times in the game. He brings them into the game all the time. They are never spending two sessions out in the field just fielding after bowling fiver overs early on.

It was in faislabad in 2006,against Akhtar and asif, though on a flat road of a pitch but in the circumstances a great counter attacking innings

Though dhoni is not necessarily what I call a bad captain, I wouldnt credit him completely for the performance of our test team. Our test team is solid because of many legends in our team (for eg: he is captain in our t20 too these days but we suck at it for last 2 t20 worldcups so its the team that matters). But point taken. But he has to improve his batting or he is a liability. or we can make him a coach and he can do managing from there while we get a proper keeper who can bat in tests.
