ICC rankings not true reflection of form: Hussey

MELBOURNE: Australian batsman Mike Hussey has rejected the ICC's Test rankings, which place his team at fifth, saying that the Aussies are "definitely better than that and the system is not a true reflection of their form." Australia dropped to an all-time low of fifth after being blanked 0-2 in the just-concluded Test series against India but Hussey said the side does not deserve to be number five. "I don't think we're the fifth-best team in the world. I don't think that's a true reflection of our team, we're definitely better than that," Hussey said. "With the new Test championship coming in, that will probably give a better indication of where teams are at, and a better understanding of where teams are ranked. "I don't think about being fifth-best team in the world, I don't necessarily agree with that," he was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald. The proposed Test Championships, if contested now, would not feature Australia because the side is not inside the top-four bracket. "We need to get up to make sure we're fourth to get into that. We've got a couple of years to continue the curve of getting better every time. I think our team is getting better all the time," Hussey said. "I have a strong belief in the personnel we've got, and the plans and processes we've put in place, that if we stick to what we know and don't get affected too much by the outside influences, I firmly believe we've got a great chance to play some excellent Test cricket in the next year," he added. The 35-year-old also dismissed talk of any possible retirement plans after next year's World Cup in the sub-continent. "I don't feel the talk. I've always made a conscious decision to not take much notice of what goes on outside the team, I don't read a hell of a lot of press, I don't watch the TV that much," he said. "I must admit last summer I found it a lot harder to get away from that because there seemed like a lot of speculation. But certainly watching guys like Sachin Tendulkar play so well at 37, Steve Waugh played very well later in his career, Matthew Hayden played brilliantly, Justin Langer - there's so much evidence of players playing very well, well past 35," he added. Hussey said as long as he has the faith of captain Ricky Ponting, he is not bothered about what is written about him in the press. "I'm going to keep believing in myself, and I feel like I've still got the faith of Ricky, the coaching staff and the selectors. As long as I keep believing that, I still feel like I've got a lot to offer."

Aus Not beter than us, SA, ENG at this stage. May be on Par or beter than Sri Lanks. But for that Sri Lanka needs to play some cricket in ENG, AUS, SA. They dont tour at all. That means SL havent lost to these teams, where as AUS have lost to Eng, SA and even couldnt beat Pak. So pretty much debatable whether they are Beter than SL or not.

Well, you are no5. Thats what the rankings show. You had an opportunity to win and stay higher, but you lost and ended up at no5. May be you will rise in future if you win or you may even fall if you keep losing. But right now you are at 5. As far as we are concerned, we are too busy enjoying our position in the rankings. Felt good to beat Australia 2-0, but personally, I would like to see Australia do better than this. Cricket is good when Australia plays in full form.

What probably Hussey means is that the gap separating the top 5 teams of the world is not as big as it seems and he’s right. We could have just as easily had a 1-1 result in the just concluded series b/w India and Australia and I don’t care if the Aussies are playing a World XI, but they’re always hard to beat at home. But when you’re ranked just above the latest-entrants-to-the-minnows, Pakistan, that does show in you in a lot of bad light. :giggle:

The ICC Test Rankings are based on a 3-4 year period with more weight given to the last 1-2 years. So the last 4-5 months aren't going to drastically move one team up the rankings. Hussey is correct in a way in that the current form (last 2-3 series) isn't directly reflected in the rankings. However, a 3-4 period is fair enough for Test rankings.

Even if the Aussies were to win the Ashes 5-0(highly unlikely , a 2-1 or 3-2 result is more likely), dont think they will get anywhere close to top 3!! And post the WC, they tour Bangladesh . Even a clean sweep there wont get them any points. Next they visit SL, where they have had problems except for their last tour (Martyn and Lehman helpedthem to a 3-0 sweep) and then travel to SA before hosting NZ and India in the end of 2011-early 2012. Looks like Aussies are going to find it hard to move into the top 3 anytime soon.
