Kumble, Srinath and Prasad to contest KSCA elections

Three of Karnataka's greatest ever cricketers - Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad - will contest elections to the state cricket association (KSCA) on November 21. A fourth, Rahul Dravid, will not contest but has indicated to his former team-mates that, if they win, he will be part of the administration in some capacity. "We are all in this together," Prasad told ESPNcricinfo. Kumble, Srinath and Prasad have all held administrative posts with the BCCI and the ICC. Kumble was named the chairman of the National Cricket Academy in September, while Srinath has been an ICC match referee for the past few years. Prasad, currently the bowling coach with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, has coached the India Under-17 team and the Karnataka Ranji team and was the bowling coach of the national side for two years. He wa sreported last week to have accepted an assignment with the Asian Cricket Council to promote the game and groom talent in the non-cricketing parts of the continent. Their entry marks the exit of an earlier generation of cricketers from the KSCA , led by its current secretary Brijesh Patel and including GR Viswanath, Syed Kirmani and Roger Binny. "With the changing times I'm of the belief that fresh energy, new ideas and young feet are always good for an institution," Patel said in a statement released on Tuesday. "We are lucky that we have Kumble, Dravid, Srinath and others willing to sacrifice their time and energy to take Karnataka cricket forward." Patel and his generation of players came into administration in 1998, and he's been secretary since then. "I've seen these cricketers closely and I've immense faith and utmost confidence in their ability and commitments to make KSCA a model association," he said. "My team and I have decided to extent unstinted support to this cause. K-S-P-R entry into administration I think its amazing that Kumble, Srinath, and Prasad have decided to contest the KCA elections and nice to see Rahul also agreeing to be part of administration. The significant part of this is that they are perhaps not like the erstwhile cricketers turned admins who were given honorary roles...these guys are contesting. I think we can expect to see India as a top cricket nation for a whole decade if these guys can make it thru the murky waters of Association elections and BCCI politics. Thoughts...

The man whom they will replace Brijesh Patel was himself a very able administrator and someone who is credited for turning around things in Karnataka cricket. He was the one who set up the a youth cricket academy (later to become NCA) at Bangalore. Another interesting this is the KSCA president is the Maharaja of Mysore who won last time defeating Gundappa Vishwanath. Major reason of Vishy's loss was the support the maharaja got from Vijay Mallya. This time too the Maharaja is contesting against Kumble. Will be interesting to see who Mallya supports. I am hoping for once he supports a legend like Kumble.

The administrators would then, at least, come through a system and there could be a special provision for former players.” Bedi, incidentally, was the cricket manager (effectively the coach) when Kumble made his Test debut, at Old Trafford, in 1990. After 12 years, Brijesh Patel, himself a former India player, has decided not to seek re-election as the KSCA secretary. The president, Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, is expected to run for a second term. Right now, everything points to a Kumble versus the Mysore royal fight. Wadiyar took the top post in 2007, defeating the iconic Gundappa Viswanath. He would, therefore, be fancying his chance this time as well. Bedi is, of course, confident that Kumble can’t be stopped. “With Brijesh publicly endorsing Kumble and his team, I don’t see anybody else winning... For me, it’s a given that Kumble will be the next KSCA president.” It was around 1977 that Bedi, then still captaining India, initiated the move to oust the Mehras from the DDCA. The Mehras were shown the door, eventually, but the proxy-culture remains. “The experience left me frustrated... The DDCA is all about coming to power through proxy votes... (Union minister) Kamal Nath didn’t do away with proxies and (BJP leader) Arun Jaitley is, sadly, tolerating that very culture. The proxy business is disgusting,” Bedi pointed out. He added: “It’s because I find the DDCA environment so putting off that I don’t watch the matches at the Kotla... It was after many years that I went to, I think, an IPL game on an invitation from (president) Jaitley... “I went not because I really wanted to, but because I wanted to do a Sir Don Bradman... He once told me — ‘I don’t watch the Packer matches because I want to, but because I want to know what’s happening around me’... I didn’t enjoy the outing, though... Too much noise pollution... There was plenty of pollution in the air as well.” Trust Bedi, the unconventional traditionalist, now 64, to be fussy. Footnote: Asked what if some in the Board didn’t take to a Kumble win well, Bedi replied: “But why not? If somebody wants to do good, then he ought to be encouraged.”

Better than political cronies though! There needs to be a system that produces administrators other than political and industrial backing.
