We rather preserve the lead (in general) than go for the win.

Its good time to declare. There are two chances (1) Kiwis will go for a win, they'll have to take their chances. This pitch is not easy to score off, hence more chance of Indian bowlers picking wickets (2) Kiwis play it safe for a draw..!
