The IPL player auction for the 2011 season will be held on January 8 and 9 in Mumbai, the league's governing council has announced. The auction is likely to be on the scale of the first one, held in 2008, with teams starting largely from scratch, and will be held under rules framed in September. The auction was initially to have been held this month but uncertainty over the composition of the tournament - with two franchises expelled and a third, Kochi, in limbo - forced a postponement. The governing council, which met in Mumbai on Wednesday, was expected to have discussed the status of the Kochi franchise but Rajiv Shukla, a BCCI vice-president and council member, did not comment on it. He did, however, reiterate that the 2011 season would have eight participating teams. The tournament will be held from April 8 to May 22, and will feature 60 matches, one more than the 2009 season. The league stages will involve each of the eight sides playing playing 14 games, adding up to 56 matches, same as in previous IPL editions. The top two from the league rounds will then contest a play-off match, with the winner qualifying for the final. The teams that finish third and fourth in the league stage will contest the other play-off, and the winner of that game will clash with the defeated team from the first play-off to decide the second finalist. Kochi have until November 27 to reply to the IPL's notice asking it to set its house in order; if, as seems likely, the franchise owners decide to call it quits, the IPL will start the auction process for a replacement team. With a majority of the current franchises in the southern half of the country, any new franchise is likely to be from the north - Ahmedabad being the front-runner. The new auction rules governing player retention, which have been criticised by the franchises, allow a team to keep up to four players but at a steep price.The first player retained will cost a team $1.8 million against the salary cap of $9 million, regardless of the amount the player is actually paid. Modi to the rescue when BCCI realises how phail they are without Modi steering the ship:giggle: Has the new IPL babu even made a announcement, insight or interview regarding IPL? It seems Manmohar and his crew are running with Amin babu sitting at the back watching quietly.

No one, teams will look to spend equal amount between players, Im pretty sure that they now realize that paying a billion dollars towards one player wont = IPL championship :giggle: :brc: :hehe: There are exceptions like Pollard. But hes one of a kind player and also Tendulkar mainly for the brand value over his tontee tontee skills. But paying a billion dollars for guys like Pietersen, Flintoff is epic :fail:

The WC final is on 2nd of April 2010. Assuming India goes onto win the WC, would anyone be interested in watching this tamasha? Or does the BCCI expect our team to again get knocked out early so that they are all available for IPL? Whats the point in kicking off this 4 days after the WC gets over? But then looking at the positive side of this, IPL ends on 22nd May, the 1st test match in England starts on 21st July. Assuming the team will reach England 10-12 days before the England tour, it leaves the entire month of June for us to tour WI (i.e. if the BCCI wants to honour the FTP). Will the BCCI be kind enough to orgaise at least a 3 test tour of WI? or would they rather play some crap tri series in Timbaktoo? Oh No..Can't take the risk of allowing them because if they Phix again, Pakis will blame the IPL..
