That's the only platforms where he impressed with his captaincy. Since then he has been pretty mediocre. There's no best captains per se rather there are various categories of captains. You have the tacticians. Captains like Nasser Hussain( Surprised that people here have not considered someone whom Sachin rated as the best captain that he played against), Stephen Fleming,Hansie Cronje fall under this category. Then we have the aggressors. The one's who beat their chest on the field and get the best out of their team. They don't mind showing their emotions on the field. Dada, Wasim bhai, Imran Khan are the prime examples of this. The Icy cool types-> MSD, Mark Taylor,Arjuna Ranatunga(Another name which surprisingly has been missed out here) fall under this. These skippers never blink their eye and never do they show their emotions. But somehow they get the best out of their team howsoever it may seem. Tugga's team in the 90's was not particularly strong on paper but he got some fantastic results with it. MSD has also been doing well with his team thought it ain't that weak. Ranatunga was the one who made SL cricket what it is today. Steve Waugh also requires a mention here. His team was not particularly weak, but he was the pivot around which the team was built. PS->I have given the names of only those whom I have seen playing. There are many other great captians like Lloyd, Border,Brearly but unfortunately I have not seen them in action.

I admire Dhoni as a captain because he gets the respect and acceptance from his senior team mates,some of them who are considered among the best ever to play the game. In case of Dada,Imran Khan and even Mark Taylor to some extent had the benefit of being one of the senior players in the team who automatically commanded respect when they led a squad comprising majorly of Youngsters. ofcourse,they also had the cooperation from other senior players of the squad..eg;Minadad for Imran,Sachin,Anil for Dada,Healy,Boon,Mcdermott for Taylor. This is where I like Dhoni because he seems to be in control when majority of the squads he led are either his seniors or contemporaries.eg;Sachin,VVS,RD,Sehwag,Yuvi,Harbhajan,Zaheer who debuted way before him or his contemporaries like Karthick,Gambhir,Sreeshanth. We can make a case for Greame Smith being in a similar position when he took over captaincy but defintely MSD seems to be more in control as a captain than Smith ever was.

Plus the Calmness that Dhoni exudes is unprecedented. Very rarely seen him perturbed. Soaks up all the pressure. Comes up with captaincy masterstrokes every game like for example, sending Pujara at No. 3 recently.

It was a very logical decision to send him early, but not a masterstroke. Agree about him keeping a cool head though. That's probably his best quality.

No one comes close to Imran Khan. The guy is regarded as the best cricket captain by many cricket pundits....but ofcourse accepting that will be against the norm of this place.

It was just logical, and a good move too, because seniors can handle the pressure in case Pujara fails. And if failed the loss was only Pujara's so kudos to him for performing under pressure. But that's hardly a masterstroke. And I hope he'll be persisted with at no. 3 in SA too.

Also, I'd hope Raina is given a chance for at least the 1st test.
