We would never know the answer to that question because he was not picked. The selectors have taken their decision on some basis. I am sure it was done after some reasonable observation and ****ysis. When half the bowling unit don't deliver, such questions are normal to rise. If RP was picked in place of Sreesanth, we probably would have been wondering today if Sreesanth would have been a better choice.

I mean in place of Ishant. I never had any hopes for Ishant in SA as his bowling style doesn't suit SA conditions as well as RP singh's bowling style. Atleast in place of Unadkat.

But still, we dont know that it would have been the right choice. When a part of the team does not do well, we always imagine that a certain other player probably could have done better. If Unadkat was ignored a large number of members on ICF would have been abusing the selectors for not picking him. Now that we have seen Unadkat, we know how he is in international conditions.

^Sane Indian has a pretty good idea about whats happening in domestic cricket and says that RPS has gone down the Rohit route of trying to get back into the side by getting fat. Also apparently his pace has dropped. Moreover has has had a distinctly ordinary season, the only highlight of which has been a 6-fer vs Orissa I think (it was against a cr@ppy team). A fully fit and firing RPS would have playing for India, but sadly he is not. Unadkat was no where near ready neither is Yadav neither should be in the squad, most ICFers I think (I hope) were of that opinion weeks ago.

It is basically horse for the courses policy. On SA surfaces he could have been effective.

He has been in the past youre right, but if he just aint bowling well at all he'll get caned anywhere. Definitely not good enough based on current form. Kumar, Munaf and Mithun should be in the mix though.

He should definately have been there instead of Unadkant, personally i had forgotten about him and had been thinking that P Kumar would have been more effective, but having seen the pitch you need pace as well as swing and RP is quicker than PK. In this match it has been a relief when Kallis has been bowling as he seems so much easier to play.

RPS is not the same bowler that you see in the video there. Fat, unfit, down on pace, lacking rhythm. Looked like getting his rhythm back in the last 2 Ranji matches where he had, after ages, started hitting 133-134 kmph and getting the ball to move. Still has got the skills of bowling an indipper, and that lovely Akramesque line from round the stumps but IMO did not look ready for international cricket yet. Could not bowl even 6-7 over long spells in the matches that Neo showed (on pitches that did assist a lot of swing and seam at Baroda and Meerut). Unfortunately just when after bowling a lot of overs he was looking like getting it all back, pulled out of the last Ranji match for UP due to a skin infection (some sort of allergy). If he can continue to work hard (especially knocking off some of the unwanted fat), I am sure he can find himself in the team for England. He now has to do well in the Ranji One dayers and then do well in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.
