don_corleone840 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 guys just look at Mahender singh dhoni, he already has a legacy with him. he has killed the best sides at their turf within 1-2 years of captaincy. he has created a team who every1 in the world will fear. while i accept ganguly was a successful captain but i don't think he can ever come close to what Dhoni has already achieved. people who talk about him being most successful captain should also know that he had lost most numbers of finals as an Indian captain. Dhoni is creating a dress room chemistry by skilled man-management but wat ganguly did was creating camps, he actually used shout at players, abuse them, Have anyone of you seen Dhoni doing this??? I know know it doesn't matter much now but ganguly ruined the career of Off-spinner Sunil Joshi. Ganguly has got just victories to his name but MSD has the victories along with EUPHORIA around the team. Under Ganguly team never threatened the No.1 position holders, now we are No.1.
vvvslaxman Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Ganguly had some tiffs with his players. For instance Srinath and Ganguly had an open tiff on the ground when Ganguly was getting desperate for wickets. But in one area both are same. THey don't care about big names missing from the line up for whatever reasons. Ganguly changed the trend of depending on one or two players . He just didn't look like a loser even before the match started when there was a key player missing.
DomainK Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Some strange remarks here: he has killed the best sides at their turf within 1-2 years of captaincy. And when did that happen? No one informed me. Do not mistake team India for Dhoni. It's India's achievement, not Dhoni's. He was of course the captain of the team and deserves full credit for that, but lets not call it his personal achievement. It's a similar argument to "Ponting has won world cups and Sachin has not. he has created a team who every1 in the world will fear. When did he create that team? Dhoni has never lost any test series ever since he took over captaincy. In fact he won the first 3/4 series of his captaincy career. So when did he get the tile to create or build the team for success? A more suitable expression would be "He inherited a great team, which of course he has manage well and has improved." People before him, inside and outside the team have contributed as well, lets not forget them all. while i accept ganguly was a successful captain but i don't think he can ever come close to what Dhoni has already achieved. Dhoni has built on the foundation Ganguly laid. He deserves credit, but I dont think has done enough to be called better. Dhoni is a great captain and we all love him. But shall we must belittle his predecessor in order to praise him? What kind of twisted prise is that? And hasnt this topic been discussed to death?
don_corleone840 Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 "He inherited a great team, which of course he has manage well and has improved. really?? our bowling lineup rightnow is not much better than bangladesh.Without zaheer , our bowlers are toothess.Ganguly had better team than dhoni but as i said earlier that he was stupid captain.

Srinath, Kumble, Harbhajan, Zaheer were his main bowlers. So yea. he had a better bowling line up.
don_corleone840 Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 dhoni leadership qualities are unmatched by other captain. This team is playing as one unit where seniors and juniors are playing together with respect for each other. No one has any complaint against any other. Sachin, dravid, lax, bhajji, sehwag all are senior and more accomplished than Dhoni but are happy playing under him. That is biggest tribute to Dhoni's leadership.
spectre Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Yes, Dhoni is certainly turning into the best skipper India has ever had. People say he got a better lineup that most should also understand Kumble and Ganguly almost had similar lineups barring few players. But Dhoni is able to keep the current bunch very involved, very motivated and respects the induviduals. He talks honestly during the press conferences and in press meetings. Offcourse, some of his decisions can baffle even his most loyal fans. He is well aided by a nice coach and good group of selectors.
ZodiaC Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Srinath' date=' Kumble, Harbhajan, Zaheer were his main bowlers. So yea. he had a better bowling line up.[/quote'] Sreenath was approaching the end of his career and had like 5-6 series under Ganguly. Zaheer was mediocre at best before his county stint (which was probably after ganguly's tenure IIRC). Should take the strength of opposition (especially Oz) into account too IMO.
yoda Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 yes, yes, yes. the results are showing. he is cool as a cucumber. used to do some strange team selections, etc, but these days can't complain much there either. but like he himself has said, it is more about the team and less about the captain alone. for all we know he could be doing what Sachin and Dravid and Laxman tell him to do behind the scenes.

Also pitches were not this flat. Dravid was in supreme form. Actually most of the Indians in the current line up are at the wee end of their career. Kumble was a genuine match winner.
f.b.m Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 If you guys want to see the difference between captains, see the BG trophy in 2008. Dhoni is clearly better when it comes to tactics. The main thing that I can remember from Ganguly's captaincy is Harbhajan Singh bowling aimlessly over the wicket to left handed batsmen and the batsmen sweeping their way to many centuries. There have only been a few times under Dhoni where we conceded 500+ runs (3 times IIRC) despite playing in the sub-continent mostly and this was absolutely commonplace with Dada's captaincy. Having said that, there is a difference between leadership and captaincy and this is where Ganguly was good. I am stating the obvious when I say that he was the more important captain in our cricketing history. ...
Shehezaada Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 oh man those were the days in the 90s, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid at their best and the holy trinity of Indian cricket. I think someone's signature here is Tendulkar - The Destroyer, Dravid - The Preserver, Ganguly - The Creator. And creator is exactly what Ganguly was. He took over in a period of extreme adversity and turmoil. We just lost 5 test matches straight against AUS and SA, match fixing. We needed a fresh start and a strong leader, and Ganguly goes on to go to the ICC Champions trophy. The players that are our match winners today -> Sehwag, Yuvraj, Bhajji, Zak, and Dhoni himself are all players that Ganguly handpicked and fought the board over.If you think the board is unreasonable now, they were a menace back then. Run by a bunch of senile old men who egs as big as the himalays. Ganguly created this team, Dravid nursed it along, and Dhoni's taking it to a new level. On a slightly different note, one of the things I'm proud about most is the lack of ego shown by our players over the years. At one point, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid were all playing under each other's captaincy. But there was no revolt, no problems. These guys aren't only great cricketers, they're also great human beings. We're blessed that their Indian.

He took over captaincy from Sachin who was absolutely clueless. Before that Azzu the traitor. When it comes to on-field tactics Dada was as clueless as Dilip Vengsarkar as captain. I don't think Ganguly had a great player rapport. But Ganguly lost lot of the accolades he gained due to his behavior when he lost form. Also keep in mind John Wright our first foreign coach played a significant role too.

Indian captains tend to start on high notes, attacking fields, plenty of bowling changes, plenty of enthusiasm. Then all of this tends to fade for some reason or another. Dhoni has a serious issue in that we keep on failing to wrap up the tail/lower middle order. Why we easily give the single away to the top order batsmen and focus solely on the lower order batsmen I will never know. In certain situations that's fine, but to do it all the time isn't very smart. He also tends to get defensive at times, but I don't blame him because the poor guy is saddled with the trundlers known as the Indian bowling lineup. Ganguly started off pretty well, some very interesting tactics in the BG 2001 series. For example the leg slip to get Waugh who was known for the flick shot. He also declared 36 runs BEHIND Zimbabwe just to force a result. At this stage I don't think one is better then the other. One thing is for sure is that Dhoni is willing to innovate or try more things then Ganguly. Towards the end of his captaincy things were getting monotonous.
spectre Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 you can mock all you want, but the results are there to see They had their bad days, but they have done much better job than all their predecessors. No.1 in tests and No.2 in ODIs :cantstop:

If not for our selectors, we would have won the home series against RSA. These guys are bunch of morons who would pick a player to warm a bench for a series and drop him to oblivion without giving them a chance to justify their selection. Some of the players who come to mind are Manoj Tiwari (hastily called up for CB series, landed a day before the match and was undone by Lee... never seen again), Dhawal Kulkarni (picked for NZ tour, dropped from the preliminary squad without actually getting a chance), Mithun (looked good in SL in the absence of Zak, but was not picked for the RSA tour), Nayar. The list actually goes on and on.
