Sachin=GOD Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 T20 world cup. Ipl CL T20 attainted and retained test no. 1 ranking for over an yr now 14 test wins only 1 against bangla, only 4 losses. One of the best ever w/l ratio as a captain. Won Numerous odi tournaments. Stronger personality than gangs. Better tactically. Calming influence. Leads by example n performance more than gangs. Tough as nails at all times. Gangs is a very good captain but the fact is , he doesnt stand anywhere close to Dhoni. Ganguly's achievements - instilling winning mentality, dealing with match-fixing controversy. IMO these two achievements are more important than most of Dhoni's achievements. It would be fair to say that Dhoni has built a building on the very strong foundation laid by Ganguly.

Talking about N0.1 Status, India was at 3 before Dhoni took over. Ganguly took us to 3rd from 6 when the ICC Rankings were introduced in 2002. Dont know if we were lower before. And Meaning less Bilateral series and ODI tournament wins are not as Half good as ICC Tornament wins and Sucess over there. Dhoni is a Failure there. Best thing About Ganguly which Dhoni Couldnt is Beat SA and Drew series against the World Cumber 1 in their backyard and of course the Only Test series win in Pak is under Ganguly.

Dhoni hasnt even lead the team in England, and we are in the Mid way of SA tour. And where does Aus comes when we talk about the number one team? Then AUS was the best, Now India is the Best, But after India its SA who are the best. So any result against SA at this stage would be pitted against Results Ganguly achieved those days. Great achievments of Gangulys team was that Ganguly beaten the world NO.1 at home and drew against them away. Dhoni is yet to achive that. And even yet to lead the side in AUS, Pak and England so as i said the Comparion is premature, we can compare both after the end of Dhonis career. Dhoni has won an odi series in aust. n recent asia cup. Bilateral series are very imp for indian fans. And dhoni has captained only 1 champion trophy and zero odi world cup tht he hasnt won. Big tournaments are more important than Meaningless Bilateral or Tri Series for Indian Cricket Fans. A team commands respect by what they do on Big tournaments. And since he has lead only in one Champions trophy with a Failure and no world Cups yet i say dont compare him with someone who did them all with sucess.

Yes One CT, to add to that Finalist once in CT 2000 and WC 2003. Thats what you call 'Good Performances' in Big tournaments and thats what Fans wait for, Its not necesary that you'll have to win everytime you go and Play, Wins and losses are part of the Game, But the performance should be good. People wait for those big tournaments for many years and remember Great performances even if you do not win. Its Much better feeling than being Knocked out of the group stage. For Fans big tournamnets are Huge, you can ask people Whats more important WC 2011 or the Odi series against SA :giggle:

We were the only team that wasn't beaten by Waugh's Australia (aka the final frontier). That itself IMO is an achievement for a team, who couldn't effing win a series against Zimbabwe away before. (which was a better team than ganguly had, mind you).

World Beating Captain indeed - Dhoni has never led the team in Eng, Aus, Pak, ODI World Cup etc and even then according to you he's the best captain we've ever had. At least wait for sometime and see how he does in Eng, Aus, the upcoming World Cup etc before comparing him to a Great Captain like Ganguly.

Dada did take us the world cup final but unfortunate that the crappy bowlers gave Ponting a gift of 140 (yes that was our best Srinath, Z,Khan and Nehra) and embarrassed us in the final. If Dhoni can win us the 2011 world cup then I would say he's better than Dada. Dhoni has better stats than Dada as a captain in Tests. So Dhoni pwns Dada

(for the same reason many recognize the past batting greats as better than Tendulkar)

Not worth wasting time debating with them. on the contrary!! you are the one undermining Ganguly's achievements to make Dhoni's achievements look much greater than they are. To look at achievements in terms of only matchs/series won (as you are trying to do in case of Dhoni) is a very, very narrow view of Captaincy. Ganguly's greatest achievements in my view is uniting the team in the aftermath of the disastrous match-fixing scandal and showing confidence in players like Viru, Yuvi, Zak, Bhajji etc. Maybe you don't consider these things as "achievements" because for you a Captain's achievements are only in terms of Win/Loss. I'd like to wait and see how Dhoni does in countries like Aus, Eng, Pak and in the ODI World Cup before calling him greater than Ganguly.
